NIPG commit over K3m for law and order

He said that is why the New Ireland Provincial Government is allocating K3.917 million towards Law and Order.

 “We are putting K1.25 million for policing and to implement the resettlement and enforcement of Vagrancy Act,

“K1 million for Police and CIS, K500,000 for Provincial Law Enforcement.

“K1.017 million for Village Court and Land Mediation Officers”, he added.

For the Local Level Government level he said K5.5 million has been allocated to build LLG staff houses for the Ten LLGs which will complement the Council Chambers already built at the LLG’s.

ENB depts urged to assist

The call was made by the Acting Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector Gabriel Bandy, following the escape of six remandees from the Kerevat Correctional Institute.

Acting PPC Bandy stressed though it is only the beginning of the year, they are already reporting crimes of armed robbery and murder.

The Acting PPC believes other government departments within ENB can assist police by providing some intervention to address the ever-increasing rate of unemployed youths.

Police needs everyone’s support

He stated this when responding to a question raised by Talasea MP, Freddie Kumai on the rise of lawlessness along major travelling routes in the country.

Tsiamalili Jr said these are challenges that require the support of provincial governments and other stakeholders.

“I call on provincial government officials to work with the RPNGC to ensure that they support the provincial policing plans and empower their local police.

Kumai raise concerns on law and order

Talasea MP, Freddie Kumai raised this issue on the floor of Parliament today.

MP Kumai is concerned that criminal activities are on the rise with no police presence along the New Britain highway.

He also mentioned that there is a certain route and link evolving around the maritime provinces of Morobe and East and West New Britain provinces both on land and sea that contributes to the rising law and order rates in the province.

Manning: 2023 Year of Law and Order

The three focus areas for the RPNG to achieve this intent include;

  1. Grow and improve RPNGC
  2. Build a safer PNG
  3. Strengthen Partnership, Government and Accountability

“We will look at growing the probationary constable numbers by 500 including 30 constables for the Bougainville Police Service and an increase of Commissioned officers by 60.

“Evolve the accommodation policy to encourage good performance and commence implementation of rolling out infrastructure maintenance and police accommodation,” he added.

Men jailed for possessing drugs

The men are Tazo Tinoa from Eastern Highlands Province, Raymond Peter from Aperera village, Kainantu, Eastern Highlands Province and Tony Walange from Suhumu village, East Sepik Province.

East New Britain Senior Provincial Magistrate, Samuel Lavutul sentenced the three men to serve their time at Kerevat Correctional Institute, after they pleaded guilty on Friday December 30.

The three were charged early this week after police confiscated 16 kilograms of marijuana drugs from them that was carefully hidden in a bag of sweet potatoes from Lae, aboard the MV Kula.

Unemployment causing law and order issues

Town mayor, Peter Yalsy said youths when employed would keep them busy and out of trouble.

He was responding to the increasing law and order issues in the province. 

Yalsy said in other centres where there are factories, farms, poultries, and big companies operating there is less trouble because the people are busy working to earn their living. 

He said in Madang, there are many companies but they are not recruiting many young people to work that is why youths are roaming the streets and involving themselves in unlawful activities.

Madang police begin festive season operations

According to Provincial Police, Commander, Superintendent David Seine Jr the police units have been grouped in teams and will report to their respective bosses during their operation.
 
He said they will be working in shifts to make sure that police presence is felt 24/7 in the province. 

PPC Seine Jr is pleased with what the Taskforce Team did yesterday, where they conducted a mini raid at Morelang near RSL Market and caught three suspects involved in producing homebrew. 
He said the suspects escaped and their homebrewing implements were confiscated. 

Policeman wounded in shootout

The incident happened at Asas One Lane Bridge along the Bruce Jepchot Highway in Ramu, Madang Province. 

Assistant Commissioner of Police Northern Command, Peter Guinness confirmed that one of the armed criminals was killed during the shootout while the others sustained injuries. 

ACP Guinness said that the police officers from Northern Mobile Group headquarters and the MS 13 officers were travelling in a convoy to Madang when the incident happened. 

Police Recover stolen Laptop

Provincial Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang, said the computer was stolen from inside the vehicle that the nurse had travelled in, while it was parked outside the New Town Plaza.
 
PPC Rubiang said criminals broke the left side cabin window and walked away with the computer. The incident was captured on the CCTV. The shop management supplied the footage police, who investigated and recovered the laptop.
 
He said the suspects are known to police. One has been arrested and is in police custody. He will be charged accordingly.
