The 2023-2024 challenge also marks NGCB’s inaugural sponsorship announced during last year’s Ipatas Cup grand final. 

So far a good start for the Lae leg of the challenge, according to tournament coordinator John Milba. 

Milba acknowledged Lae City for taking the lead in kicking off the 2023-2024 NGCB Ipatas Cup and the rest of the other designated venues to follow through in the coming days. 

Day 1 results for the Lae challenge saw Beyond Dogs thrash Ahi Warriors 42-0, and Morobe Pride defeated Blue Heelers 26-14 points in game two.

It is believed fighting started early this week after an armed holdup.

“Anyone instigating ethnic violence, that settlement will be demolished and evicted,” Rosso said.

“You want to come to Lae, you have to live and abide by the laws of this city and abide by the laws blo mipla ol Morobe.

Cultural performances, live bands, food stalls and arts and craft markets were hosted concurrently at the Lae Botanical Gardens, DCA beachfront, the University of Technology and Butibam Village. Even each ward within Lae district hosted mini shows as funding was given to respective councillors by the Lae City Authority.

Engaged to manage the design, construction and commissioning of the project is the Economic and Social Infrastructure Program (ESIP).

Lae MP and Deputy Prime Minister, John Rosso, said the first one is the K42 million double-storey market.

“Construction is close to being undertaken,” said Rosso.

“Designs and everything have been completed and it’s now going through the procurement process.

“That’s in partnership with the Australian and New Zealand governments.”

Another development that has already been designed and is currently awaiting funding is the foreshore development at the DCA beach.

Apart from the nation’s capital, St John Ambulance is operating in Lae as well following an agreement that was signed with the Lae City Authority and Morobe Provincial Health Authority in December 2020.

During LCA’s recent presentation of its annual K500,000 and on top of that, a new fully-kitted ambulance, Poumb appealed to the other Open Members of Morobe Province to consider bringing this much-needed service into their districts as well.

Lae city is moving forward in terms of infrastructural development, economic growth and quality service delivery under the leadership of Lae MP and Deputy Prime Minister, John Rosso.

Rosso outlined that ambulance services, rubbish bins, street lights and classrooms all cost money and are provided for the benefit of people living in Lae.

Lae MP and Deputy Prime Minister, John Rosso, emphasised on the importance of the emergency medical response service provided to Lae residents.

This is why since the signing of a three-way agreement between SJA, the Lae City Authority and Morobe Provincial Health Authority in December 2020, LCA has been supporting the ambulance service with K500,000 every year.

“Because of this partnership, the Lae City Authority, every year, supports St John with half-a-million-Kina to partner with St John to ensure that we provide this vital service to the citizens of Lae,” said Rosso.
