University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG)

A Grant Contract Signing Ceremony took place yesterday between the university and the Embassy of Japan under the Library’s digitalization project, to enable the implementation of Bookeye (5 V2) 3D Image Scanner Machine.

The scanner is yet to enter the country. Sponsored by the government of Japan, the scanner is built in such a way that it enables all documents to be scanned and have them archived online.

The thoughtfully designed student accommodation allows more women students to live and study on campus.

Funded by the Australian Government through an Incentive Fund grant, the accommodation will cater for 40 female students including those living with a disability. The facility has lounge areas, solar-heated hot water systems and kitchens.

They will have the opportunity to participate in an immersive 11-week industrial training program starting from November 16, 2023

The program is designed to provide hands-on experience to complement their classroom-based learning and bridge the gap between theory and practice.

During the program, the trainees will work in different departments aligned with their academic disciplines, including Processing Mechanical Maintenance, Engineering & Roads, Power Services, Process Technical Services, Mine Production, Environment, and Geology & Exploration.

The students have collected valuable books to donate to local schools, emphasizing the importance of education. They have also launched a series of programs aimed at benefiting the province.

The projects include a book drive, educational awareness, rural and post donations, cleanathon programs, and law and order awareness.

The association will also donate medical kits and drugs to various schools and health facilities in Bali Vitu LLG, Talasea District, as well as Kandrian and Kaliai in Kandrian Gloucester District.

The 2023 UPNG Geosciences Open Day marks the second successive year that the Earth Sciences Division is hosting this educational networking event. 

OTML Manager Corporate Affairs, Dexter Wagambie, presented a cheque of K5000 to Dr. Joseph Espi, Associate Professor and Head of the Earth Sciences Division, in front of budding geoscientists and staff members.

At the closing dinner of the 2023 Intervarsity Debate Competition, hosted by Divine Word University (DWU) in Madang, Bradley Yombon-Copio, the Pacific Regional Representative of the Commonwealth Students' Association, announced this in a live video presentation.

Mr Yombon-Copio went on to thank DWU President, Professor Fr Philip Gibbs for taking on this initiative and hosting the 2023 Intervarsity Debate Competition.

The Council which will be meeting for the first time on 29^th September 2023, under the direction of Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science, Technology, and Sports, Don Polye.  

Mr. Igara was responding to the Minister during a recent press conference addressing a petition by UPNG Medical students on conditions at the Medical School.

He said the matters which were addressed by the minister, will be discussed during the council meeting.

A press conference was held this week to address grievances raised by disgruntled UPNG Medical School students in regard to a recent petition to the University.

Minister Polye told media in the press conference that the matters raised by the students regarding the quality of food and the service at the mess was a matter not worthy of a political nor secretarial level, but an administrative matter.  

However, since it was taken to the public, he addressed this at the ministerial level through a press conference.

The training includes a combination of theory and practical simulations of real-life emergency scenarios. 

The Emergency First Aid Course includes a combination of theory and practical simulations of real-life emergency scenarios.  It teaches a range of first aid skills including CPR, first aid equipment, and alternatives that can be used in rural PNG.

Sil Namora, a third-year Political Science student, and Geita Taviri, a fourth-year Biological Science student at the University of Papua New Guinea were introduced to the SJA Emergency First Aid Course at the event.
