Not if, but when: unless Papua New Guinea prepares now, the next big earthquake could wreak havoc in Lae

Even in tectonically active areas, where tectonic plates meet and scrape against one another, large earthquakes may not occur often enough to seem like a priority compared to more immediate concerns. That is, until one devastates a populated area, as we’re now seeing with the tragedy in Afghanistan.

Nowhere is this more true than in Papua New Guinea. PNG is situated in one of the most tectonically active areas in the world – one that experiences more than 100 earthquakes of magnitude five or greater each year.

Let’s Work Together: Basil Jr

He made the call when he attended a gathering in Bulolo town yesterday, Tuesday 26th July to thank his supporters for their time, commitment and effort resulting in him winning the Bulolo Open seat by a huge margin.

"I want all candidates who contested the Bulolo Open seat with me to put away their differences and work with me to ensure government services reach our people of Bulolo from the four corners of the district," Basil Jr said.

"The seat is not my birthright, nor of each and every candidate who contested, rather it belongs to the people of Bulolo," he said.

Papua New Guinea advance to Women’s Nations Cup final with 3-0 win over Samoa

Meagen Gunemba’s two second-half goals, either side of Samoa having a penalty saved, secured the win after Charlie Yanding had given PNG a first-half lead.

While Samoa were intent on playing out from the back, Papua New Guinea were happy to press them in midfield, continuously winning the ball as a consequence.

Early chances followed for PNG, Gunemba heading over and Samoa goalkeeper Ronisa Lipi making a sharp save from Sonia Embahe.

Don’t Trust Website: Malaifeope

Central Province Election Manager, Peter Malaifeope, said that he heard a media organization reporting wrong progressive results for Central provincial seat.

“The figures that they were broadcasted was twice the number that we posted at the counting venue. So I called all my Data Processing Officers and Coordinator as to why this was happening. They said the information was taken directly from the Electoral Commission Website,” he said.

PNG At Risk Of Monkey Pox

Dr Daoni made these statement after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared on Thursday 21 July the spread of monkey pox constitutes a “public health emergency of international concern” (PHEIC) .

This means that monkey pox has now a clear risk on international spread. This makes monkeypox now the same alert level as SARS-COV-2 the virus that causes Covid-19.

The risk for monkey pox globally is moderate, high in Europe and there is a clear risk of further international spread.
