“Those caught will be charged and forcibly evicted and sent home.

“They will be further blacklisted and disqualified from all the Government Subsidy Policy benefits.

New Ireland Province has no tourism plan – lodge owner

“There is no tourism plan for New Ireland, “Kavieng Niu Lodge owner John Merebo said this during the official launch of the lodge’s 32 deluxe rooms extension in Kavieng on Friday.

The local entrepreneur said while other Pacific neighbour countries are harnessing the tourism industry in a big way, there is no exception as to why PNG and New Ireland for that matter keep a blind eye to it. 

New Ireland has highest population growth rate: Governor

New Ireland Governor and former prime minister, Sir Julius Chan, issued the call following the latest Health Department report.

According to the report, New Ireland is leading with a 4.5 percent population growth rate; the highest in Papua New Guinea.

Sir Julius revealed this to locals who had gathered to witness the launching of ward trucks and tractors yesterday at the Kopkop showground, Kavieng town.

Minister to send team to probe Londolovit issue

The Minister for Environment, Conservation and Climate Change, John Pundari, issued the instruction after meeting the chairperson of the Londolovit Sagomana Association (LSA), Roselyne Arau, and her delegation at his office in Port Moresby last Friday.

“I will send a technical from my department to visit Lihir. They will investigate and report back to me with a report within two weeks. I want this issue sorted out once and for all,” Minister Pundari told the LSA team.

Govt queries amendments to water permit on mining island

In a letter dated Aug 23, 2016, Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari wrote to the Conservation & Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) Managing Director, Gunther Joku, asking why there were “sudden and unknown amendments to the Water Use Permit (WUP) that allows Lihir Gold Ltd to extract 4,400 cubic metres of water per hour…” instead of the permitted rate of 3,800 cubic metres per hour.  

CEPA is tasked with the job of issuing various water usage and water disposal permits to major resource projects in the country, including mining companies like Lihir Gold Ltd.

​96 schools in New Ireland to undertake climate change program

The program is carried out by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) based in NIP with 33 schools in the Kavieng, Tikana, Namatanai, Tigak and Lavongai districts already visited by the team so far.

The team, consisting of WCS staff and community facilitators, conducted awareness and educational activities related to climate change issues to the students and teachers.

The outreach program is a new climate change initiative by WCS aimed to educate children on climate change, its impacts and adaptation methods.

Bank sponsors Aust doctors patrol in NIP

The funding will boost health patrols and reach more rural areas in 2016. This means, more children receiving immunisation, mothers getting antenatal attention, dental services and health education and awareness.

BSP came on board as a sponsor in 2015 to support their work in the community. Through this support, ADI was able to continue to work in establishing and coordinating integrated Health Patrols, visiting 26 Health Centres across Sentral East Coast, Tikana, Lavongai, Nimimar, Namatanai, Konoagil, Murat and Sentral West regions.
