NCDC aims to create healthy city

The program under the National Capital District Commission will run from June the 17th – 21st and will have a hub of activities, classes, promotions, talks, and performances. It will unite individuals, organizations and promote holistic well-being.

On Sunday 18th, the highlight was the Mass Yoga Session that was conducted by the Founder and Director of Active City Program, Fazilah Bazari, who hosted the event from 6am-8am at Ela Beach. It showcased the inclusivity and positive impact of yoga on individuals from all walks of life.

Whitecember Walk 2022

The annual Whitecember Walk with the theme “Dignity, Freedom & Justice for All” took place yesterday (Sunday December 11) from 5:30am to 8.30am at Ela Beach, Port Moresby.

About 150 city residents from all walks of life clad in white walked peacefully to show solidarity in standing up for human rights.

International Yoga Day by the Sea

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in India.

In his UN address, Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi suggested June 21, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.

High Commission of India S.L. Verma, representing the High Commission of India in Port Moresby gave the keynote speech where he expounded on the history of International Day of Yoga and its resolution proposed by India was endorsed by 177 member states.

World No Tobacco Day Walk

This is an opportunity to make people aware of the harmful effects of consuming tobacco. This year’s World No Tobacco Day theme is “Tobacco: Threat to our environment.”

The campaign aims to raise awareness among the public about the negative environmental impacts of tobacco.

While the official day for World Tobacco Day is on Tuesday, May 31, the Active City Development Program hosted a walk from Sir Hubert Murray Stadium to Ela Beach for No Tobacco Day in partnership with the World Health Organization and the PNG Cancer Foundation this morning.

Dance groups anticipate finals

The dance competition is to purposely encourage Port Moresby residents into making positive choices regarding the environment they live in while using dance as a way to communicate positively. The dance competition also provides a space for youth, students and community participants to grow and showcase their skills.

Those that participated were critiqued by a panel of 3 judges who are respected in the performing arts sector in Port Moresby and held in high regard.

City Marks Health Day

The World Health Day is a global health awareness celebrated every year on April 7, under the sponsorship of WHO, as well as other related organizations.

Each year when celebrating the event, attention is drawn to specific health topics of concern for people in their respective countries and communities.

International Women’s Day launched

Papua New Guinea is often cited as being one of the most dangerous countries in the world for women and girls and challenges that surround gender equality and protection are numerous and will take years to fully solve.

In Port Moresby efforts are continuing to be made to advocate for the rights and protection of women.

 It was with this purpose that the Active City Development program hosted a walk under the 2022, theme: ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow’, which took place on Sunday 06th March, 2022.

Early Childhood Development, Vital

National Capital District Commission’s Active City Development Program created Pilai Program launched in January this year has reached out to children in the city and Motu Koitabu villages who are not able to attend early childhood education.

Active City Development Program’s Fazila Bazari said the program has reached more than 120 children this year.

"These children have learnt faster being here than if they had not signed up. They have learnt through the recreation and play sessions to be clean, healthy, hygienic and have also adapted a nutritious diet" she added.
