Elevating NCD’s tourism appeal

This landmark agreement, signed on Friday, marks a pivotal moment in the effort to transform Port Moresby into a world-class tourist destination under the catchy tagline "Million Different Journeys in One Destination."

The MoU lays the groundwork for a collaborative effort between the two organizations to pool resources and actively promote Port Moresby's unique attractions, infrastructure, and signature events, both domestically and on the global stage.

Port Moresby International Marathon Commences

The inaugural marathon is part of Port Moresby’s Vision 2030 of a clean, safe, healthy and planned city, and a premier destination for sports and other events.

Organized by the Port Moresby Road Runners Association, 141 participants took part in the event with 47 marathon participants, 30 half marathon participants and 64, 10-kilometre marathon participants with 42 international participants from 14 different countries and 48 PNG citizens and residents.

A second chance for Port Moresby youths

The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) is implementing the second phase of the Urban Youth Employment Project (UYEP II), currently in the Motu Koitabu area and the Northwest electorate, with the other areas in town to benefit from the Project.   

Envisioned to enhance and maintain a quality standard of living and to promote a peaceful and harmonious co-existence in the community, NCDC is targeting youths who are out of the formal education system and especially those that reside in urban settlements.

One Million Trees Planting initiative launched

The initiative aims to engage the community in a large-scale tree planting effort, enhancing green cover, mitigating climate change, improving air quality, and beautifying the Nation’s Capital through planting a million trees.

This year, NCDC chose six locations around the city to roll-out the initiative; Sana Peace Park, UPNG, Boroko (Agua Road), Bisini (Soccer Field), Murray Barracks and Bomana Correctional Service.

The objective was to transform the landscape, promote sustainability, and contribute to a greener and healthier city.

NCDC raises plastic pollution awareness

In collaboration with the Conservation and Environmental Protection Authority (CEPA) and various other stakeholders, NCDC has launched a targeted program to educate communities about the detrimental impact of plastic waste on marine ecosystems. The initiative aligns with the upcoming World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5.

Collaborative Alliance Against Plastic Pollution

Coca-Cola Euro-Pacific Partners PNG (CCEP-PNG), Coca-Cola PNG, and Branis Recycling Limited have joined forces with NCDC to implement the PET PLASTIC BOTTLE COLLECTION program.

Having launched the program, local residents now have the opportunity to exchange their plastic bottles for one Kina per kilogram, effectively encouraging recycling practices and significantly reducing plastic waste in the region.

NZ invests in Gordon's market

Upon Prime Minister of New Zealand, Chris Hipkins, official visit to PNG, it shows a great milestone in the bilateral relations between New Zealand and PNG.

With Gordons Market’s state-of-the-art design and modern facilities it has attracted visitors and customers has also contributed to the economic growth since its opening on the 6th of November, 2019.

NCDC to take action

City Manager, Ravu Frank and the NCDC engineers, made a quick catchment analysis for the possible causes of the flood and several reasons was found to be the cause of the flooding.

The meeting also included the consultancy of a Papua New Guinean hydrology expert based in Brisbane, he advised that the downpour occurred over two hours in high intensity, therefore the impact was massive and unprecedented.

Parkop pledges support to MKA

Governor Parkop made the public announcement this week during the opening of two multiple classroom buildings at Baruni Primary School.

Governor Parkop was at Baruni Primary School to witness the opening of the two new three-in-one classrooms, which the NCDC co-funded.

Parkop assured the people of Baruni that he wants to live up to his pledge to give all the money coming from the land which the people had in the past but may have lost to the development of the city back to the Motu Koita Assembly.

9-Mile cemetery upgrade

Complementing with the new four-lane road, the fence project is part of the master plan to upgrade and rehabilitate the area.

Achieving safe, clean and planned public space, the plan will feature a sealed network of access roads, new tomb at the hill-tops, crematory facility and standardised headstones.

City Manager Ravu Frank said the cemetery was a sacred place and it must be respected with dignity.

Almost 1 kilometre of the fence was constructed already with two kilometres more to go.
