Due to constant power supply issues, the Baro Community Health Post relies on a backup generator that serves a population of approximately 11,000 people, for Baro and the surrounding communities.

“Currently, we do not have full time or constant electricity, which affects our ability to provide essential services to our patients,” said officer-in-charge (OIC) of the health post, Mark Bandi.

The K200,000 contribution will further efforts to facilitate the promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Papua New Guinea. This work is being conducted under the UNDP managed, Facilitating Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Applications for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction (FREAGER) Project.

The project aims to remove barriers to the uptake of renewable energy technologies and to achieving greater energy efficiency for communities across PNG.

In a strong message to the Government, the Committee said that proper funding be allocated during its budget session on 16^th of November 2021, for the National GBV Strategy in resourcing its activities across the country.

Chairman of the Committee, Charles Abel with fellow committee member Governor, Powes Parkop represented the committee and raised concerns relating to the rise in GBV cases and how the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the country has contributed to the increase of violence.

The country has been facing an enormous rise in cases relating to COVID-19 and the delta strain, exposing the St Johns Ambulance to face struggles as calls for assistance grows.

Minister Wong expressed his gratitude towards the Indian and UN partnership for procuring the much-needed ambulances that have arrived at a time where the pandemic has ravaged the country’s health system.

As the number of infected people soar, emergency response services have been stretched to limit. Ambulance services have struggled as calls for assistance grow.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) proudly announced two of the country’s rising business stars at the awards event on Saturday. 

The UNDP and UN Office of Drugs & Crime (UNODC) will implement the project together over the next three years in collaboration with and through the Government of Papua New Guinea, including the Department of Justice and the Attorney General.

Mr Wagener thanked Minister for Justice Bryan Kramer for the ongoing partnership of his Ministry with the UN team. Kramer heads the DJAG team that has been leading the national fight to tackle corruption.

Civil Society, youth organizations and the media will also benefit from project.

The project will focus on four key areas;

The budgets will support their efforts against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Papua New Guinea.

The workshop was organized in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Papua New Guinea, as part of the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative for Ending Violence Against Women and Children.

DfCDR is responsible for leading the drive to implement the National GBV Strategy 2016-2025.

In the workshop, Acting Secretary, Jerry Ubase, made it clear that this is a priority for the Department to work against GBV.

Today saw a continued collaboration to develop provincial budgets to fund anti-violence and support measures.

A three day workshop was held by UNDP and the department, to strengthen provincial planning and budget. This ensures that the resources issued by the provincial authorities go towards ending violence against women and children.

The rise in GBV cases in Papua New Guinea has painted a disturbing image of the country making it the least safe place for women and children to live in.
