Drought hits Ijivitari

The long dry season that continues to this day has dried up steams, and rivers and destroyed food gardens.

The President of Tufi LLG Luke Nunisa shared his people's struggle with the drought, saying they need access to clean water and food.

“The start of the drought season has hit the district hard since May of this year, and it has been three months. My people’s livelihood remains hanging in a balance,” he said.

Nunisa said the drought has contributed to the spread of airborne diseases and increased lifestyle diseases.

Health centre to be refurbished

Member for Ijivitari, Richard Masere, said the contractor engaged was presented with the payment to start the refurbishment of the Wanigela Health Centre today.

The contractor, Eziro Services, had completed the refurbishment of the Gona Kikiri Health Centre and Kausada Aid Post and was asked to deliver a similar standard in Wanigela.

Masere said more work is expected to start soon to refurbish other health facilities in the district.

Northern Beaches Included in Kokoda Initiative

This will see the Northern Beaches benefit from development funding made available by the government and development partners.

Member for Ijivitari, Richard Masere, says they missed out in the past and had to seek support independently for the Northern Beach Communities.

Stanislaus Ivahupa has been nominated as the representative of the Ijivitari District, he will advocate and raise concerns and issues of the people of the Northern Beaches.

Wangillen asks court to quash conviction

His lawyer made submissions in court this afternoon on an appeal he filed against the decision of the Waigani National Court.

Wangillen was found guilty on Feb 19, 2015, by the National Court for conspiring with another person and misappropriating K400,000, monies belonging to the Ijivitari District.

He was sentenced on June 11, 2015, to five years in jail.

The appeal against conviction was on three main grounds. A three-man Supreme Court heard submissions today and reserved its ruling to this Friday.

Ijivitari’s former district Treasurer appeals sentence

Wangillen was found guilty on Feb 19, 2015 by the National Court for conspiring with another person and misappropriating K400,000, monies belonging to the Ijivitari District.

He was sentenced on June 11, 2015 to five years in prison.

The appeal against his conviction and sentencing will be heard on Oct 25. The date for the hearing was set yesterday after the case came for directions hearing.

Managalas Plateau considered for conservation to protect Birdwing butterfly

The endangered Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing butterfly is endemic to the area.

Minister for Environment and Conservation John Pundari said PNG has a lot of endangered species and conservation is very important.

Pundari explained that while the plateau is considered for conservation, finding alternatives for the people to sustain their livelihood is a challenge.
