Juffa Welcomes Proposed Moratorium

Governor Juffa said this is needed, as the country currently does not have a regulatory framework by which it can regulate this particular emerging industry.

As a strong advocate for environmental protection and rights of resource owners, he urged the Government to go further and review any existing projects and suspend them until then, the Government established a robust regulatory framework in place to regulate the emerging sector.

CEPA suspends Environment Permits

Minister responsible Wera Mori made these remarks at yesterday’s press conference. He said they had been operating illegally.  

The Minister said he had obtained reports of environmental issues and illegal logging by these companies operating in the Wanigela and Tufi areas of Oro Province resulting in the decision.

Questions in regards to the issue were raised by Oro Governor Garry Juffa during the passing of the Climate Change Management Act 2015 in Parliament on Thursday, 14 October 2021.

Climate Change a Priority

The discussion was focused on the new framework of the European Union-PNG Partnership under the new soon to be adopted Europe Union -Caribbean and the Pacific Agreement (EU-ACP Agreement).

Both leaders have agreed for the Department of Environment Conservation and Climate Change to play the leading role in implementing the key areas in responding to climate change in the country.

The new partnership under the new EU-ACP Agreement is aligned with the EU Green Deal global ambition for climate change action and biodiversity preservation.

Studies Confirm Climate Change Irreversible

He has now appealed to citizens to collectively address climate change by planting trees and mangroves to mitigate carbon concentration. 

The Minister said the findings are alarming and has also warned that we brace ourselves to the impacts of climate change.

“In parts of the country, we are now experiencing dry spell where we are now at a situation where daily temperature is rising.

“We will have temperature above what is normal and that will affect the livelihood of our people.

CEPA And Partners observe World Oceans Day

The program is supported by PNG Coral Triangle Initiative National Coordinating Committee.

Partners include USAID, UPNG, Pacific Adventist University, Prime Minister's Department and NEC, World Wide Fund, The Nature Conservancy, Coral Sea Foundation, Sea Women of Melanesia, USAID Lukautim Graun project, Hiri Coral  and members of Locally Managed Marine Resources.

The two day celebration started today with a seminar.

World Environment Day

The theme for this year’s WED is “Ecosystem Restoration” and CEPA is focusing on terrestrial/Forest ecosystems and marine ecosystems conservation through their Sustainable Environment Program (SEP).

CEPA Deputy Managing Director, Dilu Muguwa said last year, Minster for Environment and Climate Change Wera Mori launched the “ten Million trees in Ten Years” tree planting Initiative, which supports the planting of one million trees per year, an initiative that supports this year’s theme.

World Oceans Day

This was announced together with the program for the World Environment Day and the Coral Triangle Day by the Conservation and Environment protection Agency (CEPA) this week.

CEPA’s Director for Sustainable Environment program, Kay Kalim said the World Ocean Day is used to celebrate the significance of all the marine resources that PNG has that provide the livelihoods for all the coastal people living in those areas for their livelihood. She also outlined activities that will be carried out to commemorate World Ocean Day.

Northern Beaches Included in Kokoda Initiative

This will see the Northern Beaches benefit from development funding made available by the government and development partners.

Member for Ijivitari, Richard Masere, says they missed out in the past and had to seek support independently for the Northern Beach Communities.

Stanislaus Ivahupa has been nominated as the representative of the Ijivitari District, he will advocate and raise concerns and issues of the people of the Northern Beaches.
