Govt services must continue during election: Governor

During the Tutumang last Wednesday, he told the Provincial House that they would continue with their constitutional duties until the return of the writs.

The Governor stated that some of their LLG presidents would contest the National Elections but the majority of them will resume as LLG Presidents and be part of the Sam Sewec (Provincial Executive Council).

"It is crucial that government services continue to flow during the election period and therefore they will continue to provide services as required by the Constitution," clarified Naru.

Morobe officially releases GG

On Easter eve, the Morobe Provincial Tutumang (Assembly) farewelled him on behalf of the Morobe Provincial Government and its people.

On Easter Sunday, St Paul's Lutheran Church released the Governor-General as a church member of the congregation.

Governor Kasiga Kelly Naru said Dadae is the first Morobean to take the vice regal post and they are proud of such an elevation.

"Dadae is one of our Morobe sons to take the post of the Governor General and we are truly proud.

Serial prison escapee captured in Lae

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr said, “at 6pm Police were able to apprehend a notorious criminal who had been on the run and had been committing serious crimes such as armed robberies and car thefts.

The prison escapee was captured at Papuan Compound area, with live ammunition in his possession.    

“(The suspect) had escaped from Buimo (Prison) three times, the latest being the mass break out last year.

“He has since been committing crimes with violence and has been a menace to the community.”

K30,00 worth of drugs seized in Lae

Lae Police Boss Anthony Wagambie Jnr said the drugs were destined for Kimbe, West New Britain Province.       

“The five suspects were apprehended on board a double cab Nissan Navara with the bags of drugs on board. Police CID tailed them and intercepted them.

“The prime suspect admitted to Police that he had bought the drugs from Goroka for K1,500 and wanted to take it to Kimbe to have it sold.

“The street value of the drugs at Kimbe would most likely be more than K30,000 if sold at K1 rolls,” Wagambie Jnr said.   

Tragic PMV accident claims 6

Eyewitnesses claimed the bus was travelling at high speed towards Nadzab when it came upon another vehicle in front. The driver tried to veer away from it when he lost control.

The 25-seater PMV bus, which operates between Lae and Nadzab in Morobe Province, ran off the road near the Flour Mill at Six-Mile and nosedived into the nearby drain.

The driver and five others died instantly from the impact while other passengers were rushed to the Angau Memorial General Hospital.

Police were at the scene to assist the casualties.

Man killed during marriage dispute

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr said the incident occurred on Saturday night at West Taraka.

“There was a domestic dispute between a husband and wife. The husband badly assaulted the wife, resulting in the family members of the wife stepping in and attacking the husband, who is now the subject of murder,” Wagambie Jr said.

Wagambie Jr said the man, who was stabbed in the fight, was pronounced dead at the Angau Hospital.   

“The suspect is a prison escapee,” said Lae’s police boss.

Dadae is PNG's new Governor-General!

The vote was the first business of the day.

The three-term MP, from Morobe Province, was declared with 55 votes, defeating former Parliament speaker and Nawaeb MP Timothy Bonga, who collected 36 votes in the second secret ballot vote.

The other nominee, former Rigo MP and PNGDF commander Edward Ranu Diro, was eliminated in the first round of the secret ballot voting.

Dadae is another serving parliamentarian voted to occupy the vice-regal office.

The term of the current Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio expires at the end of this month.

Four people die in land clash

Reports reaching police said the fight, during Christmas Eve, was between the Saiko and Atwara villagers of the Ward 2 council area of Garaina Local Level Government, Bulolo district, Morobe Province.

Provincial Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Augustine Wampe, said a man, a woman and her 2-year-old girl were allegedly murdered by the Atwara villagers. As a result, the Saiko villagers retaliated and murdered an Atwara man at Wau and wounded another back at Garaina.

Unfortunately, police could not attend to the matter as the area is inaccessible.

30-year life span estimated for Wafi-Golpu

Executive project director of the Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture, Bryan Bailie, said this during the PNG Chamber of Mining and Petroleum Conference in Sydney early this month.

According to Business Advantage PNG, Bailie says the project could be ‘multi-generational’ and has the potential to be a ‘long duration sustainable mining operation’ that could last ‘28 to 35 years or more’.

If developed, the mine will be the largest underground mine in PNG and the first green field mine development since the Hidden Valley mine commenced in 2009.
