Holocaust survivor Henri Kicha succumbs to Covid-19, age 94

He was one of a handful of people left who survived Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp in occupied southern Poland during World War II.

He spoke to the BBC in January about his experience. Asked how he survived, he said: "You did not live through Auschwitz. The place itself is death."

In a Facebook tribute, his son Michel Kichka wrote: "A small microscopic coronavirus has succeeded where the entire Nazi army had failed. My father had survived the Death March, but today his Life March has ended."

CENTRAL DONATES FOOD

The hand-over of food supplies was witnessed by Prime Minister James Marape, NCD Governor Powes Parkop and Church leaders.

BPNG to assist financial institutions

He explained that BPNG will be working with financial institutions to assist those affected.

Bakani said loss of jobs means a loss of income and the Bank of PNG is working with financial institutions to help those affected.

One of the measures the Central Bank took was reduce the Policy interest rate, by 2 per cent. This led to banks reducing their base lending rates and associated rates and fees for products and services they offer, to allow customers to borrow at lower rates during this crisis period.

Another measure BPNG took was injecting liquidity with banks.

SOE Controller lifts restrictions

These include the reopening of flights into East New Britain, resumption of public transport, and amendment of the curfew in NCD, Central and Western Province.

In a statement issued, as of 6pm April 24th, all:

·       Flights restrictions into and out of Rabaul are lifted and the Port of Rabaul to be re-opened as a designated international shipping port.

Schools to recover lost hours

The Ministry of Education has issued instructions to schools to recover the lost instruction hours and to continue in this 2020 academic year.

Minister for Education Joseph Yopyyopy has issued directives to all teachers from elementary to Secondary schools to resume on the 27th of April to prepare for the resumption of classes on the 4th of May.

Term 2 classes will start on the 4th of May and will end on the 10th of July.  Term 3 will start as per the Education Calendar which is on the 20th of August.

Missouri sues Chinese government over coronavirus handling

In the lawsuit, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt alleges China did little to stop the spread of the virus.

Mr Schmitt claims Missouri residents have suffered possibly tens of billions of dollars in economic damages.

China's foreign ministry denounced the move, saying the "frivolous lawsuit has no factual or legal basis".

A spokesperson said: "Really absurd. Based on the principle of sovereign equality, US courts have NO jurisdiction over the Chinese government."

Super Act changes expected soon

The ASF's currently are preparing to process the COVID-19 relief payment recently announced by the Government.

In a statement released on Monday April 20th, only members of super funds who have ceased working, effectively losing their jobs as a result of COVID-19, will be eligible for the relief payment.

Regulatory changes to make the payments lawful are expected to be passed soon while work has already commenced on preparing new forms and making changes to the operation side of benefit payments once changes to the Superannuation Act are complete.

Stars take part in One World: Together At Home concert
