Registry of Political Parties

The parties were de-registered on 28  January, exactly three months before the issue of writs on 28 April. The 11 political parties are;

The Registrar of Political Parties, Dr Alphonse Gelu, has said that in recent times his office has fielded queries regarding announcements by certain organizations declaring themselves as political party entities, launching and having rallies.
 
“The Registrar of Political Parties is mandated to oversee the administration of all registered political parties. Only this office has the true and correct records of all registered political parties.
 

The activities include raising awareness through expos, conducting workshops and mentoring programs.

The ultimate aim is to strengthen the system of parliamentary democracy and the party system in the country.

The registry will conduct nationwide awareness on political parties, a mentoring program for respective political parties and run learning and development workshops in 2021 to prepare the parties for the 2022 national election.

A new initiative that the Registry undertakes is the Political Parties Expo.

Polye said it was unacceptable for a leader of Ipatas calibre to abandon PP and join PNC.

He also said Ipata’s nomination under the PNC banner was a ‘blunder’ and ‘illegal’ and called for the Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates, Dr. Alphonse Gelu to de-register both party’s.

He further added “therefore I’m urging very strongly that Dr Gelu sets the precedence without fear or favour to start the de-registration of these two political parties.

About 10,000 post cards signed by concerned customary landowners across the country were delivered today to the Lands Department Office calling for action on the Special Agriculture Business Lease land grab.

The Registry of Political Parties would like to promote debates amongst leaders of various political parties as they must become visible to the people.

Registrar of Political Parties Dr Alphonse Gelu urges leaders to talk about their policies thus making elections in PNG to be policy driven by the leaders of the political parties.

Dr Gelu said it’s better to put leaders of political parties together in a room and give them equal time to talk about their parties and their policies.

Registrar of Political Parties Dr Alphonse Gelu said parties must not exist only in Port Moresby and not only in certain provinces in the country.

Dr Gelu said the Organic Law requires all the parties to be nationally based, that is they must be represented in all parts of the country.

This also requires them to put up candidates in all the different parts of the country.

“The Registry would be monitoring this aspect of geographical representation by parties closely.

The Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission this week approved the applications of seven new political parties.

Gelu said the timing of registration of these new parties poses a challenge for them.

The parties now have only a month to tell the people about themselves including their policies.

They have to compete with well-established political parties such as People’s National Congress (PNC), National Alliance (NA), Pangu, National Party, United Party and PNG Party.

Investigations into the death of the late Ruby Laufa have progressed with Traffic police now taking over the investigations.

44 Political Parties confirmed for 2017 National Elections

The new parties were announced and presented with certificates today as registered political parties approved by the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission.

They will meet in a one hour session on March 3 in Port Moresby to announce their four main policies that they will campaign on in the 2017 national election.

Registrar of Political Parties Dr Alphonse Gelu said the session will not be a debate but to allow the leaders of these parties to showcase themselves and their parties.
