Trivedy assures continued support to help Bougainville

One very important area which the UN continues to support  are its parliamentarians and its governance system.

Recently the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative, Roy Trivedy was on the island as part of a delegation to mark the 15th Anniversary of the Bougainville Peace Agreement.

The Bougainville Peace Agreement was signed on August 30, 2001, to usher in a new beginning.

Six NCD schools participate in debate challenge

They are Badihagwa, Gerehu, Jubilee, Marianville, Port Moresby International School and newcomers Koiari Park High School.

Previously known as the IBS School Debate, the Emstret Tokaut Debate Challenge is scheduled from August 29 to September 1.  

The challenge also includes schools from other provinces and comprises three competition categories, Provincial, National and Melanesian.

The schools will battle it out for the three days and the overall winner, the provincial champions, will represent their regions in the National Championships.

China joins UN in condemning North Korea ballistic missile tests

The Security Council issued a unanimous statement, agreeing to take "significant measures" in response to the latest series of launches.

North Korea has test-fired several ballistic missiles in July and August, includingone from a submarine towards Japan on Wednesday.

China is Pyongyang's main ally.

The North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said the submarine-launched missile test was the "greatest success", putting the US mainland and the Pacific "within the striking range".

Philippines' Rodrigo Duterte threatens to leave UN

Mr Duterte said he might ask China and African nations to form another body. He also accused the UN of failing on terrorism, hunger and ending conflicts.

Mr Duterte, elected in May, has sanctioned the killing of traffickers to try to wipe out the drugs trade.

The UN has repeatedly condemned the drive as a violation of human rights.

Some 900 suspected drug traffickers have been killed since Mr Duterte was elected on 9 May.

Hundreds of city youths celebrate International Youth Day

IYD is an awareness day designated by the United Nations.

The first IYD was observed on 12 August, 2000.

The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. 

It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide.

The event in Moresby commenced as early as 5am at the ‘Walk for Life’ event with National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop.

Kevin Rudd uses opinion piece to warn United Nations risks becoming irrelevant

It comes in the wake of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's decision not to nominate him to run for the UN's top job of secretary-general.

Mr Rudd argued the UN writes too many reports and has rigid institutional silos.

He also offered prescriptions, including that the UN prioritise field operations over head office and better include women.

Zika: UN health agency launches database on worldwide virus research

The database is called the Zika Research Projects List.

In a press release, the agencies said PAHO has systematically identified and collected basic information on all investigations related to Zika, both those already published and those on track to be published. The database includes the title, authors and a direct link to the article. 

NCD women carry out market awareness at Gordon

This was a challenge to the youths of Gordon’s community during an awareness campaign initiated by United Nations, National Capital District Commission and the Royal PNG Constabulary today at the Gordons market.

The campaign aimed at discouraging youths from harassing women and girls in the community especially at the Gordons market area and on the streets.

PNG ranked 158 in global Gender Equality Index

The United Nations (UN) states it is vital therefore for PNG to accelerate efforts to achieve gender equality and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN reports that pervasive cultural and systemic obstacles still prevent women from participating in political and economic life in PNG as well as many other nations.

UN agencies in PNG are working with other stakeholders to advance gender equality.

International Womens Day focuses on gender equality

It is a day that is celebrated by the United Nations (UN) since 1975 and serves as a day to celebrate, acknowledge and recognize the work of women in their countries and communities.

The UN appeals for more effort in realizing gender equality as stated by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Goal 4 specifically targets “gender equality”, all other goals also necessitate gender equality and engagement of women.

UN strongly recognizes women as key agents of change in achieving the SDGs.
