Somare Institute of Leadership and Governance (SILAG)

SILAG to accept students from Pacific region

Department of Personnel Management Secretary Taies Sansan said this after attending the 16th Pacific Public Service Commissioners Conference in Wellington, New Zealand held from November 13-16, 2023.

Ms Sansan highlighted the importance of training public servants in the region to better deliver services to our people.

SILAG mandatory for public servants

Michael Barobe, SILAG’s Chief Executive Officer announced this new arrangement during the institute’s recent graduation at the Northern Training Centre in Madang.

Thirty-two (32) public servants graduated with Certificate in Middle Management and Diploma in Public Administration respectively at a ceremony hosted by SILAG at the Madang Resort Hotel last week. Eighteen are pioneers in obtaining the Diploma in Public Administration program.

DICT Staff conquer public service induction

SILAG’s Business Relations and Strategic Relations Director (BISR), Allan Kamale, stressed on the importance of accountability and transparency in public service at the graduation ceremony yesterday.

"When you go out, have it in your mind that you are serving the people of PNG and God, and I hope you go back and become better versions of yourselves,” he stated.

DICT Secretary Steven Matainaho acknowledged the efforts of SILAG for successfully inducting the DICT staff into public service. He urged the inductees to remember their role in the department and the country.

PILAG renamed to Somare Institute

This change in name comes after the Pacific Institute of Leadership and Governance Amendment Bill 2023, passed in Parliament today.

The bill will rectify legal oversights, challenges and gaps in specific provisions of the 2017 Act.

In his speech, Public Service Minister Joe Sungi said, “The first impediment area of concern was to do with the transitional provision of the Act that regulated that transitional period from the PNG Institute of Public Administration to the Pacific Institute of Leadership and Governance which were all achieved and not applicable at present.”
