Samsung surprises with Galaxy Flip Z Oscars reveal

The device was revealed ahead of its heavily-rumoured official unveiling at the Galaxy Unpacked event on 11 February.

The first-look focused on the smartphone's ability to sit at a 90-degree angle during video calls.

It also noted that the presence of a "small crease" on the screen was a "normal characteristic".

The surprise advert confirmed that previously leaked renders of the device were mostly accurate.

Digicel slashes smartphone prices this Valentine’s

From Friday, 3 February, until Friday 17 February, Digicel will significantly reduce the prices on a variety of smartphones, including Blackberry, Alcatel and CAT.

Featured handsets include the Blackberry Z10 for K499.50, down from K1, 299; the Blackberry 9790, which was K1, 399 and will now sell for K649.50; the Alcatel 5050 now priced at K199.50 from K499 and the CAT B15, which was K949, and will sell for K499.40.

Digicel Managing Director, Mobile, Shivan Bhargava said the smartphone sales event was expected to be popular among locals.

DNA-testing smartphone aims to tackle drugs resistance

The creators of the phone-powered pathology microscope believe it could be mass produced for less than $500 (£406) a unit.

These smart shoes could be the answer though, as boffins at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have developed a pair of trainers capable of recharging your phone as you walk.

Dubbed InStep NanoPower, the new "bubbler" tech makes use of the kinetic energy generated by repeatedly putting one foot in front of the other.

The shoes use a high-tech sole fitted with a pair of flat plates separated by a small gap filled with a conductive liquid.
