NRI: Disaster offices need more funding

This was highlighted in a research report produced by the PNG National Research Institute, titled ‘Adverse Impacts Of Climate Change in Papua New Guinea: Are we ready to adapt and manage disasters?’

The research paper was written by PNG NRI’s associate Professor Eugene Ezebilo and Maureen Thomas.

The aim of the research was to examine the preparedness of PNG to adapt to climate change and manage natural disasters using drought and frost incidence of 2015 as a case.

NRI Director Charles Yala farewelled

Dr Yala has been Director since mid-2015 and leaves having had a 22-year association with the Institute since graduating with the University of PNG.

Dr Yala has made significant contributions to the work of the Institute both as Director and as a researcher.

His work in the land reform area has been pioneering coinciding with the work of the National Land Development Program since 2005.

He has contributed to various policy research, advice and commentaries on important issues.

SABL issue must be addressed: NRI article

That is the title of the latest blog article released by the PNG National Research Institute (PNG NRI).

The article highlights concern around issues raised by customary landowners over the lack of action on recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) on SABL.

Enhance connectivity to allow free trade among countries: Dr Yala

Speaking at the Sub-regional Workshop on Connectivity Development in the South West Pacific Region last Thursday, Dr Yala said enhancing connectivity within the SwPD block has the potential to enhance people to people network.

He said the connections will allow free flow of goods and services, enhance trade and investment and in the process improve the welfare of the people of the SwPD block and beyond.

Hence, he said the focus of the SwPD aimed at developing and improving connectivity is a noble one.

Australian envoy to visit NRI

The purpose of the official visit is to announce the Australian Government’s support for the PNG NRI 2017 Research Program, and its support to the APEC Study Centre at the PNG NRI.

High Commissioner Davis and his delegates will first tour the refurbished Thomas Webster Research Building, then the proposed APEC Study Centre, followed by a meeting with the PNGNRI management at the PNG NRI Board Room.

 

Pangu Party to promote policy at NRI forum

NRI director Dr Charles Yala made the confirmation in a media conference today.

The public forum will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting next week, and the eight sessions will be held this month at NRI conference room in Port Moresby.

Dr Yala said the aim of the forum is to encourage political parties to develop constructive policies and give awareness to the voting population.     

“Our interest is to make an input into the policy debate during the national elections.

Facebook to be a campaign tool for election

Director of the PNG National Research Institute (NRI), Dr. Charles Yala said technology, especially social media will play a far more important role in the elections, unseen before. 

“In the past bulk of the policy issue and the information used to be Port Moresby centred, the rest of PNG did not have access to this information or if they had, it was pretty much delayed,” Dr Yala said.  

“But with social media and mobile phone, the information is getting out there, whether it’s right information or wrong information, it is out there.”

PNG lacks housing affordability data to solve issue

The country’s think-tank National Research Institute latest report on Affordable Housing revealed that it is still unclear which households are targeted by the affordable housing program, and the roles of government housing agencies and private property developers in providing housing are not clearly de­lineated.

The Report stated that the housing prices are generally high and many people may find it difficult to meet the requirements to access the FHOS, especially the initial 10% housing loan amount as well as the 4% interest rate on the loan.

No adequate provision of affordable housing in city: Report

The National Research Institute (NRI) latest report on affordable housing have revealed that households that spend more than 30% of their income on housing would have housing affordability problems.

The Issues Paper, by Property Sector Development Research Program Senior Research Fellow Associate Professor Eugene Ezebilo, provides insights into developing an effective and efficient affordable housing strategy in Port Moresby.

Govt withdraw from housing provision: NRI

This is one of the findings emerging from The Housing and Property Policy Development Report study launched by the National Research Institute today.

The finding is one of five to have emerged from the report, which was presented by former NRI Director, Dr. Thomas Webster and Dr. Lindsay Kutuan.

NRI Director, Dr Charles Yala, said the evidence was overwhelming in that the private sector delivered major housing projects while the public sector lagged in getting things off the ground.
