These innocent victims of crimes committed by their mothers spend up to three years in jail until they are released back into the communities with families.

They eat what is basically served to older inmates – a diet that consists of staple foods. 

The Bomana correctional institute outside the nation's capital is no different.

With a female population of 30, it currently has two toddlers under the age of 3 who are under the care of their convicted mothers.

It starts small, and it starts with caring for the animals closest to you.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) of Papua New Guinea was out on World Wildlife day to promote the 5 basic freedom of animals:

#1 Freedom from Hunger and Thirst – people must make sure their pets are fed properly and have clean drinking water

#2 Freedom from discomfort – pet must have a proper place to sleep

#3 Freedom from pain, injury or diseases – if your pet is sick, treat them. Take them to the vet – RSPCA

“As they grow up, girls must be exposed to a broad range of careers, and encouraged to make choices that lead beyond the traditional service and care options to jobs in industry, art, public service, modern agriculture and science.

“We have to start change at home and in the earliest days of school, so that there are no places in a child’s environment where they learn that girls must be less, have less, and dream smaller than boys.
