Medical reports state the soccer star died at 3:27am local time due to organ failure caused by colon cancer.

The death of the only man to win the World Cup three times as a player was confirmed by his daughter Kely Nascimento on Instagram.

Pelé's official Instagram account also posted about his death.

Neymar turned 26 on Monday and Ronaldo is now 33, with the pair sharing a birthday as well as a place among the footballing elite.

And Pele was among those to pay tribute to the pair on their special day.

"It seems that people born on this date have a better chance of having magic in their feet," Pele wrote on social media.

"Happy birthday Neymar and Cristiano!"

The 77-year-old was due to travel to London this weekend for a dinner held in his honour by the Football Writers Association (FWA).

Pele - the only player to win three World Cups - withdrew and the FWA said he was being monitored by doctors.

But his spokesperson called reports of his hospitalisation "fake news".

"He just didn't want to make a long and stressful trip to London, in and out of who knows how many planes and airports," said Jose Fornos Rodrigues. "That's all."

Pele has been taken to hospital for kidney and prostate problems in recent years.

Edinho, a former Santos goalkeeper, handed himself in to police on Friday after a Brazilian court ordered his return to prison.

His solicitor said they would take their appeal to the Supreme Court following the latest failed attempt to quash the conviction.

"As he always did, Edson showed up when the arrest warrant was issued," Eugenio Malavasi was quoted as saying by A Tribuna.
