Consort Express Lines Expands Fleet

This strategic addition, which seamlessly joins Consort's operational network since November 2023, signals a noteworthy investment in PNG's shipping infrastructure.

Acquired on February 3, 2024, for K25 million, MV Papuan Coast is an 8000dwt multi-purpose vessel designed to accommodate 318-TEU, catering to various containerized, break bulk, and project cargo needs. As the largest container vessels trading coastally in PNG, the Papuan Coast marks Consort's progressive fleet expansion, which now boasts 20 vessels.

Kimbe Chief maiden voyage

The Kimbe Chief made its maiden voyage to bring this important medical equipment safely to its port.

Kimbe Port Manager for EAST WEST Transport and Shipping Henry Taurakava said the vessel is owned by Consort Express Lines, and was specifically brought into PNG to cater for the volumes that EastWest Kimbe have, especially those going in and out of the province.

New cadets welcomed

The two engine and two deck cadets begin their seafaring careers with Consort after passing a rigorous selection process to join the 2022 Cadetship Program.

“We’re pleased to welcome a new generation of Papua New Guinean seafarers who will bring new ideas and standards onto our marine fleet… Cadets form a fundamental part of Consort’s dynamic training program and will also lead to a greater selection pool of certified Officers within the maritime community, ultimately benefiting Papua New Guinea’s maritime industry,” stated Edward Fitzgerald, Consort’s Marine Manager.

Newly-certified marine officers

The company-sponsored officers obtained their Officer of the Watch certification after completing a 14-month course abroad.

“We’re happy to welcome the next generation of officers and maritime logistics experts. Consort Express Lines is proud as a company which continues to upskill our staff through consistent training courses and further education,” said Edward Fitzgerald, marine manager at Consort Express Lines.

CEL contract awarded to Norwegian software firm

Tero Marine will roll out its TM Master range of applications to Consort Express Lines’ fleet of general cargo vessels, including 14 tugs owned by Pacific Towing. Both companies are members of the Steamships Trading Company within the Swire Group.

The agreement with Tero Marine covers their full range of fleet management software applications across procurement, maintenance, crew management, quality and environment.

Consort Express Lines chief operating officer, Chris de Villiers, said there were several reasons for choosing Tero Marine’s TM Master.

Australia bans ‘Kiunga Chief’

In a statement last week, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) implemented the ban after an inspection of the ship revealed over 70 deficiencies.

AMSA said the ship was detained for a third time in less than 18 months due to the failure of its operators to safely and effectively manage the operations of the vessel.

On June 5th, an official direction banning Kiunga Chief was issued at the Port of Brisbane where it has gone into anchorage to undergo an inspection by AMSA’s class society, before it continues its voyage.
