Team PNG contingent confirmed

The contingent includes Chef De Mission, Tamzin Wardley (former treasurer of PNGOC), two members of general team management, a chief medical officer and a physiotherapist.

Sir John also confirmed that three Papua New Guinean sports leaders will perform administrative and technical roles at the Tokyo Olympic Games in their respective capacity outside of Team PNG.

Auvita Rapilla, PNGOC Secretary General, is attending the Games and IOC Sessions in her capacity as IOC Member.

Sir John to lead new-look board

This follows elections held on Saturday, June 27th, during the organisation’s Annual General Assembly held at the Gateway Hotel in Port Moresby.

As per the PNG Olympic Committee Constitution, the elections were conducted using an exhaustive ballot process supervised by the PNG Electoral Commission.

Sir John Dawanincura surpassed challenger, Ralph Tarasomo in the second round of voting, by one vote after the third candidate for the position, Karo Lelai, was eliminated in the first round.

National federations engaged in dialogue

The meetings spanned a month and were chaired by the President of the PNG Olympic Committee, Sir John Dawanincura, and Secretary General, Auvita Rapilla.

The objectives of the meetings were to provide key information on the services and programs provided by PNG Olympic Committee. These include addressing governance and compliance requirements of PNG Olympic Committee and giving the opportunity for National Federations to raise issues of concern including feedback on PNG Olympic Committee’s services to them.

PNG Olympic Haus open

The new office is at Lahara Avenue in Boroko, National Capital District, and was opened by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, on May 9th.

Bach congratulated the PNG Olympic Community on this milestone achievement and also presented them with the certificate of recognition as a National Olympic Committee.

He said the Olympic Haus can be the home of Olympics and Olympism in PNG.

2019 Trukai Fun Run launched

In 1999, Trukai Industries painted the streets of Port Moresby, Lae and other participating centres with their signature bright yellow-coloured t-shirts.

The 2019 nationwide Trukai Fun Run was launched today in Port Moresby.

100,000 t-shirts will be available for the fun run, which is set for June 16th.

Dawanincura awarded Honorary Life Time Membership

The award was presented by President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Louise Martin, at the Federation’s Annual General Assembly on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Sir John’s award honoured his long-term commitment to sport and the Commonwealth movement, over three decades, including the creation of the PNG Commonwealth Games association.

The Commonwealth Games was the first multi-sport games that PNG attended with Team PNG participating at the British Empire Games, the forerunner of the Commonwealth Games in Perth, 1962.

Kumul Petroleum supports Team PNG

KPHL came on board to support Team PNG prior to the Pacific Mini-Games in Vanuatu last year with K500,000.

An additional K500,000 was also committed to Team PNG to assist with getting the team to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

President of the PNGCGA, Sir John Dawanincura, was grateful to KPHL’s managing director, Wapu Sonk, and his board for recognising the importance of supporting PNG’s elite athletes to the XXI Commonwealth Games.

Pom auction fetches K139, 000 for Team PNG

There was a small turnout, but President of the PNG Olympic Committee, Sir John Dawanincura said it was understandable with the current economic crisis plus with APEC preparations underway in the nation’s capital.

He was still appreciative to all the corporate bodies plus the government for their continued support to Team PNG’s endeavours.

13, 900 shirts were sold at the Royal Papua Yacht Club for 98 schools in and around Port Moresby.

Team PNG begins preparations for Samoa

They gathered in Port Moresby last Saturday with the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee in the first Games workshop to share their plans, progress and Games targets.

President of the PNGOC, Sir John Dawanincura, said the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games presents this opportunity for Team PNG to create history on foreign soil.

He also pointed out that it was the Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, who presented the team with this challenge at the end of the 2015 Pacific Games.

2018 SP Sports Awards launched

There to witness the occasion were representatives from different sporting bodies plus sponsors of the Sports Awards.

President of the PNG Olympic Committee, Sir John Dawanincura, said 2017 featured great sporting moments for PNG which should see nominations flooding in.

“These achievements deserve to be recognised and the people involved congratulated for their efforts.”

He thanked SP Brewery for continuing to recognise sports through the Sports Awards since 1992.
