2018 SP Sports Awards launched

The 26th SP Sports Awards was launched in Port Moresby with nominations now open.

There to witness the occasion were representatives from different sporting bodies plus sponsors of the Sports Awards.

President of the PNG Olympic Committee, Sir John Dawanincura, said 2017 featured great sporting moments for PNG which should see nominations flooding in.

“These achievements deserve to be recognised and the people involved congratulated for their efforts.”

He thanked SP Brewery for continuing to recognise sports through the Sports Awards since 1992.

Managing Director of SP Brewery, Stan Joyce, described sports as the glue that unites people and their passion to be the best.

“Personal sacrifice, commitment and support is the foundation for any athlete to succeed. SP Brewery understands the challenges faced by athletes and continues to bring to PNG the annual SP Sports Awards.”

He said last year, more than 60 nominations were received and expected a lot more this year.

The categories are:

  • Male Athlete of the Year
  • Female Athlete of the Year
  • Team of the Year
  • National Performance of the Year
  • Community Sports Initiative
  • Junior Male Athlete of the Year
  • Junior Female Athlete of the Year
  • Best Sportsperson with a Disability
  • Sports Official of the Year
  • Sports Media of the Year
  • Sports Photo of the Year

The 12th category is the People’s Choice Award which will be open after the finalists have been announced on April 28.

The closing date for nominations is March 16.

The SP Sports Awards will be held on May 26.

This year’s theme is ‘Together We Can’.
