This year, the event fell on April 27^th, and was commemorated by the PNG University of Technology’s ICT Services Department.

ICT support officer, Reggie-Anne Banjua, outlined that by celebrating Girls in ICT, more girls and women will be encouraged to take up the traditionally male-dominated field.

Four main speakers joined the event today; they were representatives from the Department of ICT, the National Information and Communications Technology Authority, a PNG ICT Professionals representative and a Master’s student.

The latter rang through for a number of families who had attended the 53^rd graduation ceremony of the PNG University of Technology on Friday.

Grieving mothers, a young husband and a teenaged boy respectively clutched portraits of their loved ones as they took slow, agonising steps up to the stage to receive degrees on their behalf.

Clive James, his three-year-old son and his mother-in-law, Arua Haita, stood in line with the Property Studies in Property Valuation graduating class of 2021 to get the late Rebecca Haita’s degree.

The two institutions, after signing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) two months ago, started the partnership with Prof Shamsul Akanda, Dean of Postgraduate School, Unitech, hosting a seminar recently held at the PNG NRI Campus in Port Moresby.

NRI Director Dr Osbourne Sanida, in his opening remarks, said: We achieve more if we work together than if we work in isolation”.

The University administration decision follows the deaths of two senior academics who died within a day of each other and had developed signs of COVID-19 prior to their deaths. The actual cause of deaths has yet to be confirmed.

Returning officer Daniel Wasinak confirmed no polling for the station after ballot papers, totalling between 1,500 and 2000, were burnt by angry students yesterday.

He said from what he received, the students were upset on the shortage of ballot papers for the polling station.

But Wasinak said there was no shortage.

“There are other polling stations in the ward and the ballot papers were distributed accordingly through the wards. There was no shortage.”

A source on the ground says student voters destroyed the polling booth because ballot papers did not match the number of eligible voters – an estimated 4 thousand plus voters against just more than 1100 ballot papers.

Lae’s metropolitan superintendent, Anthony Wagambie Junior, said police responded to the ballot paper burning episode, where three prime suspects have been identified.

Two of the suspects were caught boarding a 25-seater bus parked outside the campus with a large group of people after the ballot papers were burnt.

Wakia, from Wapenamanda District in the Enga Province, is one of many citizens that have developed and furthered their education with support from Oil Search. 

She joined the company in 2012 as a graduate petroleum engineer in the Graduate Development Program. She held the positions of development petroleum engineer and well integrity engineer before being appointed to her current role as production engineer, overseeing the Kutubu Central Processing Facility (CPF).

This was introduced this year by the PNG University of Technology.

Deputy Registrar, Student Administration, Henry Gioven revealed this recently and urges grade 12 school leavers in the country, who have filled their School Leaver Forms and indicated their choices to study at PNGUoT next year, to register and sit for this compulsory STAT-P test.

Pro Vice Chancellor, Academic, Dr. Augustine Moshi said if students do not sit for the test, they will not be considered for admission at PNGUoT in 2017.

The University needs K8.5m to cover for students’ meals, transportation cost for teaching practice and for maintenance of facilities that were damaged during the conflict in June.

As per the National Executive Council decision, the total recovery cost for all universities is about K63 million. 

In the breakup, the PNG University of Technology will be given K40m, University of PNG K12m, Office of Higher Education K3m and UOG K8.

So far, UPNG has received K1m and Unitech will be presented K1m on Wednesday.
