Unitech polling station permanently closed: RO

The polling station at the University of Technology, in Lae Urban LLG’s Ward 5, is closed permanently.

Returning officer Daniel Wasinak confirmed no polling for the station after ballot papers, totalling between 1,500 and 2000, were burnt by angry students yesterday.

He said from what he received, the students were upset on the shortage of ballot papers for the polling station.

But Wasinak said there was no shortage.

“There are other polling stations in the ward and the ballot papers were distributed accordingly through the wards. There was no shortage.”

He said as per the schedule, polling in Morobe Province is one day and there will be no exception for this ballot box.

“They burnt the papers so what’s the use? When polling is closed, it’s closed. There will be no polling.”

The incident took place around midday yesterday.

Wasinak said nobody had a chance to cast their vote.
