NRL supports UNICEF appeal in wake of Fiji devastation

In addition to the donation, the NRL has pledged to continue to work with UNICEF and their rapid response network and is encouraging fans and communities to support the appeal and the people of Fiji as they start to rebuild.

Australian Rugby League Commission Chair John Grant said the Rugby League community has close ties with Fiji, with some of the game's finest and most popular players coming from Fiji.

Klemmer to miss Round 1

Klemmer was slapped with a grade two dangerous contact charge for a tackle on Kenny Bromwich in his side's 20-0 win over the Melbourne Storm in a trial played at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday.

Dogs' Brett Morris out for a month

The Seven Network reported that the NSW and Australian star was behind schedule in his recovery from a knee operation late last year.

What was initially thought to be a routine cleanout of his knee turned into something more serious for Morris, with doctors finding significant damage.

Morris admitted to Fairfax in December that he'd been "playing on only one leg" at the end of the 2015 season.

He managed just 14 games throughout that year with a series of hamstring and knee complaints.

Barba eyes Sharks No.1, Maroons jerseys

However, the 26-year-old is backing himself to not only snap up the Sharks No.1 jersey but also a Queensland jumper in 2016.

Barba believes he is closer than ever to recapturing his 2012 Dally M Medal-winning form after being pitted with Valentine Holmes and Jack Bird in a fight for the Cronulla fullback spot this pre-season.

"Obviously all I have trained is at fullback, that's my best position - I won a Dally M there," Barba told AAP.

"Even though I am battling out with two young guys there, all I can do is play my best footy in the trials and see what happens."

Robson a key recruit for Warriors: Ropati

While high profile Kiwis duo Issac Luke and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck have drawn the most fanfare since announcing they would be moving back across the ditch, it's Robson who Ropati expects to carry much of the burden.

"A lot of people are talking about Shaun [Johnson], Issac and Roger. But Jeff Robson, to me, is the key because he's going to be the one to steer the ship 80 per cent of the time to ensure everything goes to plan," Ropati told NRL.com.

Project Paasi paying dividends for Titans

Having arrived on the Gold Coast prior to Christmas overweight and underdone, Paasi stripped plenty of kilograms in the early stages of the Titans' pre-season having taken the gamble to save any semblance of an NRL career with a modest 'train and trial' contract.

But the big test was how he returned at the start of 2015 and whether the Titans coaching staff saw enough commitment and sacrifice over the Christmas break to warrant issuing the then 23-year-old a second-tier contract.

No shortage of leaders at new-look Eels

One-time Sea Eagle David Gower told NRL.com his 2011 Grand Final teammate Kieran Foran's professionalism and competitiveness were already shining through in his time at Parramatta while fellow new faces Beau Scott and Michael Gordon were bringing their considerable experience to bear.

"Those three guys are internationals or Origin players for a reason," Gower said.

"The professionalism of those three guys and even the other guys we've brought in, we've brought in experience and NRL-calibre players. All the boys are fitting in well and we're all training hard.
