Broncos earn bragging rights after holding off Cowboys comeback

Having led for the majority of the contest, the Broncos fell behind with 20 minutes to play when Jeremiah Nanai crossed untouched for the Cowboys, before regaining the lead late on through Jesse Arthars to secure a narrow two-point victory.

Stepping in at halfback with captain Adam Reynolds rested, Jock Madden looked comfortable alongside Ezra Mam and young sensation Selwyn Cobbo at fullback, with the trio scoring or assisting all of the Broncos' first half tries.

Tigers down Roosters in the wet

The Tigers trailed 8-0 early as Roosters halfback Sam Walker caused havoc but coach Michael Maguire would have been pleased by his side's defensive resolve before they piled on two late tries to snatch victory.

Rival props James Tamou and Lindsay Collins were placed on report for dangerous contact and are in doubt for the opening round.

However, there were no major injury concerns in an entertaining yet low scoring match, in which Walker, Joey Manu and Victor Radley impressed for the Roosters, while Jackson Hastings made a strong debut for the Tigers.

Reynolds' experience already rubbing off at Broncos: Mead

The former Rabbitohs skipper has stopped in for a few sessions already even though his grand final commitments earned him a longer rest, in a move that impressed his new team-mates, according to Mead.

"Adam Reynolds has joined the squad a couple of times throughout the year which has brought a lot of excitement and enthusiasm from a lot of the young guys," Mead said.

"He's played at the top level for a long time, he's an experienced halfback, knows how to organise.

"Good talker, an experienced organiser so we enjoy having those qualities about him."
