Forestry officers upskilled on drone usage

The use of drones will greatly assist the PNG Forest Authority monitor vast forest resources and project areas.

The two-week workshop ended on Friday with the Japan International Cooperation Agency handing over five drones to the PNG Forest Authority.

Each drone is worth US$5,000, or K17,000.

Concerns over unsafe drone flights near airport

Hubert Namani said: “I have received a report of at least one UAV/drone very recently being operated from a house or houses within Kennedy Estate, Eight-Mile.

“The UAV was observed operating above light post height to an undetermined height.

“Kennedy Estate is less than 2km from the Jackson’s airport boundary and under the Runway 14L flight path. This presents a significant safety risk and danger to aircraft and the travelling public, as well as to the residents of Kennedy Estate.”

Drones ground flights at Gatwick Airport

Gatwick's runway has been shut since Wednesday night, as devices have been repeatedly flying over the airfield.

Sussex Police said it was not terror-related but a "deliberate act" of disruption, using "industrial specification" drones.

About 110,000 passengers on 760 flights were due to fly on Thursday. Disruption could last "several days".

An airline source told the BBC flights were currently cancelled until at least 19:00 GMT.

The airport advised that the runway would not open "until it was safe to do so".

Bee's eye view could help robots, drones

The way humans see colour is heavily affected by the changing light around them, such as during a sunset or in the middle of the night, but bees see the same colour regardless.

The Melbourne-based team has studied how bees solve this problem, by using three special eyes on top of their head, in addition to two main eyes at the front.

"The three eyes point skyward, and they directly sample the colour of the light above us," Dr Adrian Dyer of RMIT University said.

"If it's a sunny day or a cloudy day, [those three eyes] can detect that.

Drones prompt 'flood' of complaints to police

Last year, more than 3,456 incidents involving drones were recorded, compared with only 1,237 in 2015, PA news agency reported.

The numbers suggest about 10 incidents per day are being logged, it said.

Drone-based complaints include invasions of privacy, disputes between neighbours, near misses with aircraft and prison smuggling, said PA.

The news agency said the total number of drone incidents was likely to be higher than the figure it had given because not every force it contacted with its Freedom of Information request responded.

Passenger jet approaching Heathrow in drone 'near-miss'

Pilots spotted a gadget with multiple arms and up to eight rotors pass by the right hand side of the plane as it was preparing to land.

Both pilots exclaimed: "Was that a drone? At 10,000 feet!", air safety experts UK Airprox Board (UKAB) said.

The drone was estimated to be about 98ft (30m) away from the plane and "safety was not assured", UKAB added.

Large drones are not permitted to fly above 400ft (121m) or within proximity of airports or airfields.

It happened on 11 November 2016, so quickly the Airbus A320 pilots said they had "no time to react".

Researchers use drone to pollinate a flower

The remote-controlled drone was equipped with horsehairs coated with a special gel, which the researchers say was crucial to the process.

"This is the world's first demonstration of pollination by an artificial robotic pollinator," said Eijiro Miyako of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan, one of the authors of the study, which was published in the journal Chem.

Japan pushes forward with countrywide drone delivery services

With a new FAA drone license in tow, Amazon has received a patent for its Prime Air drone delivery system.

The country has a long history with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and has used the devices for land surveys, farming, security, construction, and even town mascots.

Lady Gaga brings message of inclusion to Super Bowl halftime -- oh, and drones

The Grammy winner kicked off her fiery halftime show at the top of Houston's NRG Stadium singing "God Bless America" before transitioning into "This Land Is Your Land."

Then, before Gaga jumped from the roof, she concluded her emotional intro by quoting from the Pledge of Allegiance: "One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all," with a clear emphasis on the "for all" part.

Lady Gaga's Super Bowl show to feature hundreds of drones

Lady Gaga's Super Bowl halftime show will feature hundreds -- yes, hundreds -- of lit-up drones, a source with knowledge of the show's production told CNNMoney.

The source said the inclusion of unmanned aerial vehicles required clearance from the Federal Aviation Administration, which has placed a ban on drones at or near the stadium.

Earlier this week, the FAA declared a 34.5-mile radius around Houston's NRG Stadium a "no drone zone" on game day.
