Just recently the travelling public found out that they have had to pay up to 3 times more than what they usually pay.

According to Air Niugini’s current website under the checked baggage section, the allowable weight per passenger (infants not included) is 20kg for business class, 29kg for executive club members and 16kg for economy class.

A reliable source within Air Niugini says the fees for excess baggage have now changed from the usual K7 per kg fee.

“Air Niugini is charging in zones now,” reveals the source.

The engineers successfully completed five years of training and received their licences in a ceremony in Port Moresby on 10^th Oct, 2017.

This licence, granted by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, is recognised worldwide and now allows these young Papua New Guineans to be able to certify the completion of maintenance on United Kingdom registered aircraft. They could even easily convert their UK licences to an Australian or New Zealand (NZ) licence and certify for Australian or NZ aircraft.

“This is due to advice from National Airports Corporation that they have had to close the airport due to public intrusions onto the runway, damage to airport facilities and threats to NAC staff,” the firm said in a statement.

Flights PX 860/861 on Sunday 08^th, 15^th and 22^nd October have been suspended while the airline closely monitors the situation.

“If the airport becomes available for operations prior to these dates, Link PNG will re-open these flights for sales.

On Sunday, 24^th of September, there will be one special flight to Brisbane at 7am specifically for those who wish to watch the grand final.

The same flight will return straight after the match at 10pm on the same day.

The migration to the new Passenger Service System (PSS), Sabre Airlines Solutions, is a significant milestone.

Chief executive officer, Simon Foo, said Air Niugini will continue to inform its customers through regular updates and highlight any key features/information on the website as the transformation date draws closer.

Link PNG’s General Manager, Bruce Alabaster said the services to Wapenamanda have been temporarily suspended since June this year, due to obstruction of trees at the runway approach paths.

Alabaster said: “The trees have been cut,  and we can confirm the runway approach paths are clear. Our first flight for the resumption of operations to Wapenamanda is scheduled for next Tuesday.”

This follows advice from the airport authority, the National Airports Corporation (NAC), that the airport has been reopened.

In a statement, the firm said: “The NAC, police, airlines and community representatives held a meeting at the airport area yesterday morning where police and the communities concerned have assured the traveling public and staff working at the airport of their safety.

“Air Niugini suspended all flights to and from Mt Hagen last week due to election related unrest.”

A sit in protest at the airport area blocked off access to the terminal forcing flights PX 180, 182, and 186 not to operate.

On Tuesday, Air Niugini was forced to suspend only its morning flight while all flights for Sunday were suspended.

In a statement, Air Niugini said it is closely monitoring the tense situation and will advise when flights to the airport will resume.

Passengers of the suspended flights are advised they can have their tickets revalidated for the next available flight or to reroute via other Air Niugini ports to continue to Port Moresby.

Air Niugini public relations office confirmed with Loop PNG this afternoon that its three flights out of Port Moresby were on schedule.

The airline also confirmed that its last flight at 3pm had just departed for Kagamuga.

Kagamuga International Airport came to a standstill on Wednesday afternoon as candidates contesting the Mt Hagen Open Seat blocked off the airport.

Flights in and out of the airport were cancelled with frustrated passengers from the other Highlands provinces left stranded.
