Suspect in Sogeri incident apprehended

A key suspect, alleged to be involved in the attempted carjacking of an expatriate family at Sogeri on Saturday, October 21, has been apprehended.

This was revealed by Provincial Police Commander Laimo Asi this afternoon.

Police have reason to believe that the apprehended suspect is one of the men in an old man’s masks that ran towards the vehicle in an attempt to hold up a family consisting of a couple, their two children and paternal grandfather.

The family was travelling down from a sightseeing trip at Varirata, outside Port Moresby.

The whole ordeal was captured on a dashboard camera and has since gone viral on social media; even attracting international attention.

PPC Asi said the suspect was apprehended yesterday afternoon however, details of his origin were not clear.

Police say he is a known criminal with a record of similar activities along the Central highways.

Asi said the suspect is now in police custody for questioning; he will be further interrogated for more information.

He also noted that there is a possibility of the involvement of more than five men, as shown in the video.
