Three former prime ministers call for ‘Government of unity’

The Opposition members have been called on to form a government of unity if they win the vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Peter O’Neill on Friday July 22.

Former prime minister and Governor of New Ireland Sir Julius Chan made this call yesterday when he moved to join the Opposition camp in Port Moresby.

Sir Julius along with the founding father Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare and Sir Mekere Morauta called for unity among the Members of Parliament and to lead the country in a democratic way.

“Do not cast aside all those across the aisle on the other side, instead declare the formation of a government of national unity,” Sir Julius told the Opposition members.

“Bring the best people from both side and commit yourself to truly honest and transparent government and take real step to keep those promises made by the past government.”

Sir Julius further reiterated that the unity and honesty must be exercise at all times if they want to change the focus of the government.

Meanwhile, the three former prime ministers also called on the MPs on the other side of the camp to consider their conscience and make a move rather than being depleted by their selfish egos.

Their (former PMs) presence at the Opposition camp brings reliec to the people and the country as a whole.

The vote of no-confidence will be on Friday 10am.

So far the Government members are camping in Alotau while the Opposition are based in Port Moresby.

The camps by both parties have raised concern by many people in the country calling for democracy to prevail.
