Geothermal energy found on Karkar Island

Geothermal energy could soon be sourced out from Karkar Island located 10 nautical miles across the north coast of Madang Province.

This was announced by Member for Sumkar Ken Fairweather in Parliament on Friday.

Fairweather asked if PNG Power can travel to the Island to investigate if the geothermal energy can be used for electricity.

Geothermal energy is the heat from the Earth and it's clean and sustainable.

Fairweather said Karkar Island has the perfect scenario for geothermal production of electricity which is very cheap and clean form of electricity.

Minister for State Owned Enterprises William Duma in response said that PNG Power will be sent to investigate that exciting opportunity.

Duma highlighted that PNG is one of the few countries in the world that has all the sources of energy available starting with solar energy, natural gas, hydro energy and now geothermal.

“I’m very pleased to hear that we have another geothermal source of energy on Karkar Island.

“The source is not far from the mainland so it can actually be turned into our advantage to provide electricity for Madang.

Duma thanked the Member for making this known and assured him that provided that he is able to organise the landowner from that area, PNG Power stand ready to go and investigate.

He added that a team will be ready to travel to Karkar Island at short notice to investigate that exciting opportunity.
