REDD+ Forest Monitoring Web Portal

PNG to submit REDD+ forest level plan by end of 2016

The REDD+ FRL represents the expected evolution of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the forest sector in the absence of REDD+.

A common approach to setting a FRL is to take an average rate of emissions from historical deforestation, but these can also be adjusted to account for future changes in a country.

Results of REDD+ activities like agricultural expansion, conversion to pastureland, infrastructure development and destructive logging are measured against the FRL.

First ever National Forest inventory launched

This was launched today by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and witnessed by PNG Forest Authority staff, representatives from European Union and United Nations, JICA and Food and Agriculture Organisation.

The NFI is multi-purpose covering not only the timber stocks, but the carbon stocks, biodiversity, the non-timber forest products including soils type and small plants.

Information data collected will also be used by the public, Non-Government Organisations and other government departments such Climate Change, Mining and Petroleum and Agriculture.
