QRL Hostplus Cup 2022

Round 17 Match Report: SP PNG Hunters v Sunshine Coast Falcons

From the opening set it was clear this was going to be a physical contest. Hunters’ forward Sylvester Namo came off the back fence from the kick-off and launched himself into a wall of Sunshine Coast defenders, leaving multiple bodies in his wake including Falcons’ prop Max Bailey who was forced from the field.

With the tone set, both sides got to work as the Sunshine Coast locals watched on.

Pride too strong at home for Hunters

With a strong wind at their backs to begin the game, the Pride wasted no time going on the attack thanks to an early penalty conceded by the Hunters in the kick-off set.

Suddenly camped on their own goal line, the Hunters looked like they’d defended the set until Pride fullback Julian Christian took possession on the last, feigned a kick to the left and turned back in towards the ruck to link with Matthew Egan in support.

The Hunters’ cover defence couldn’t close the space in time as the Pride halfback opened the scoring with a clever four pointer.

PNG Hunters vs Northern Pride Round 12 Preview

Sunday’s clash is an important game for both sides, who currently sit equal on the ladder with three wins apiece so far this season.

With the pointy end of the year approaching, the two points on offer in Round 12 are invaluable as the Hunters and Pride both chase a coveted finals berth.

Hunters Hopeful For Third Win

For the Hunters, Sunday’s game is a chance to post their third win of the season and build towards the back half of the year.
While there have been signs of genuine improvement over the past month as the young Hunters side continue to adapt to speed and the quality of Hostplus Cup, they do not need to look far.
The Hunters will need to look back to their efforts against Norths and Townsville in Rounds 7 & 8 for a blueprint for success this season.
