Court dismiss Kikala’s conviction appeal

In handing down the decision, Justice Ere Kariko, Justice Sir Kina Bona and Justice Theresa Berrigan ruled that Kikala be remanded in custody to serve 7 years in prison.

Kikala was convicted in May 2017 for misappropriating more than K1.1 million whilst serving as MP for Lagaip-Porgera.

Kikala’s lawyer from NiuAge filed for an appeal on the basis of errors of mixed fact and law and was granted bail by the Supreme Court on May 25th 2018.

Former MP Sentenced

The 63 year-old from Tsiaka village, Laiagam in Enga province, was the sitting member between the years 2007-2012, when he misappropriated a total of K1, 107,000.

He stood trial at the Waigani National court and was convicted on four counts of misappropriating various amount of money, over a period of three months in 2012.

Whilst the sitting MP, he registered a company under the name of West Rural Industries limited.
