Mike Manning Youth Democracy Camp

Youths from democracy camp visit media organisations

The excursion is an activity in line with media, an important topic the week-long camp has covered, among various topics, consistent with the principles of democracy and good governance.

The group of 53 were divided into two, with one group visiting EMTV, a long-time television broadcasting company in PNG, while the other half to PNGFM, a radio broadcasting company.

This excursion was organised with the idea that the youths will see and better understand the media as a tool in development.

Journalists have a commitment to rural PNG: Council

This came as a reminder when Media Council President, Alexander Rheeney, visited the Mike Manning Youth Democracy Camp today to speak on the roles and responsibilities of the media.

Majority of the 53 youths gathered for the week-long camp were from provinces outside the capital and had a lot of questions, particularly towards media's part in rural PNG’s development.

It was very emotional for the youths, speaking about the hardships in their respective provinces.

The annual program which began yesterday has attracted youths from 15 secondary schools across the country, one higher institution, two non-government organisations and two community based organisation.
Transparency International (TI PNG) had introduced this program in 2008 directed to teach youths about principals of democracy and good governance.
This is with understanding that youth have an important part to play in the substantial development of the country.
