Ruling expected soon on human trafficking case

Police prosecution have completed and served the accused, Willie Gare, a hand out brief of their investigations.

The matter is now ready for the court to make its ruling at the end of June. The 42-year-old Gumini man was arrested and charged on Nov 9 last year at Kundiawa and had his case transferred to Port Moresby.

Gare was charged for one count of unlawfully confining eight females and a male, one count of exploitation and one count of sexually penetrating one of the victims at Kundiawa town.

The victims involved are from Lealea village in Central Province.

Police sign deal to counter human trafficking

The MoU signified an agreement for IOM to help and assist the RPNGC in boarder protection in coordination with other law enforcement agencies in instances of counter trafficking in human beings, assistance to internally display persons, human trafficking emergencies as well as tribal conflict mitigation and resolution.

Commissioner for Police Garry Baki says it is of great importance that the RPNGC also now moves in the direction of knowing that there is an MoU binding us and what we need to do order of being part of this international organization dealing with migration.

A 42-year-old man from Korokoa village, Gumine district, Chimbu Province briefly appeared at the Waigani Committal Court on Thursday over allegations of human trafficking.

Human trafficking high in Marshalls, PNG and Solomons

The country ranks the worst out of all island Pacific nations in the US State Department's Trafficking in Persons Report 2015.

The Marshall Islands' poor record revolves around the capital Majuro's role as a port of call for foreign fishing and transhipping vessels.

It says Marshall Islands girls are recruited by foreign business owners to engage in prostitution with crew members of the vessels.

It also says some Chinese women are recruited with promises of legitimate work and forced into prostitution after paying large recruitment fees.
