Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is real in PNG

Papua New Guinea is facing internal and international trafficking of men, women and children.

Trafficking for the purpose of both labour exploitation and sexual exploitation occurs at a high rate, as well as trafficking for domestic servitude and child trafficking, even though to a slightly lesser extent.

The Department of Justice and the Attorney General (DJAG) presented a request to the ACP-EU Migration Action for Technical Assistance (TA) to counter the crime in PNG by enhancing the law enforcement capacity.

'Fake' Indian journalists held in Australia over human trafficking

The group told officials at Brisbane airport that they had arrived to cover the Commonwealth Games.

If convicted of human trafficking, the journalist, who had a valid media pass, faces up to 20 years in jail.

The group had travelled through Bangkok, where officials suspected them of carrying fraudulent documents and alerted authorities in Australia.

Workshop addresses Human Trafficking agenda

Relevant agencies need to take note of this and be able to identify the survivors as well as establish how best they can go about addressing the issue of human trafficking.

In reference to these challenges, 10 defence and prosecution lawyers were in a two day basic awareness workshop to identify best approaches towards combatting trafficking in persons.

The lawyers were challenged that this is an important agenda to addressing the Human Trafficking issue and understanding the victim referral pathways through relevant agencies.

Australian man trafficked wife and baby to India, police say

Police say the man, 27, used threats, coercion and deception to force his wife and two-month-old girl to leave against the woman's will in March.

He then allegedly tried to cancel his India-born wife's Australian visa.

The man faced a Sydney court on Tuesday on three charges, including human trafficking and forgery of documents.

"It is a disturbing case where we see a victim and their young child transported from Australia to a foreign jurisdiction without any means for them to return home," said Australian Federal Police Supt Dan Evans.

Victims of human smuggling need safe houses

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says it does not have a separate facility to accommodate and act as a safe house for these victims but it is using current facilities like those of the family and sexual violence unit.

Several ‘Meri Seif’ houses across the city are also used to accommodate these victims but they are only kept for up to two weeks, which is now a challenge trafficking victims face.

This issue was raised during the three-day workshop facilitated by IOM and the Department of Justice and Attorney-General, or DJAG. This workshop ends today.

The objective of the workshop is to enhance and identify cases of human trafficking in PNG following the increased instances of trafficking in the country.
