Health technical team visits Gazelle facilities

This is for compliance with the Health Department’s approved facility standards.

Following a recent meeting with the ENB Provincial Health Authority CEO, Dr. Ako Yap, and his Senior Executive Management Team and District Administrator, Allan Balbal, the Minister for Health and HIV-AIDS and Member for Gazelle, Jelta Wong, made an undertaking to immediately deploy a technical team from the National Department of Health to East New Britain.

Gazelle district eyes rural electrification

In its recent meeting, the DDA board approved the rural electrification rollout from Putanagororoi to Vunapaka Health Centre, Utmei to Mandres station and Tinganagalip junction to Palnakaur.

The overall cost for these three major rural electrification work is about K1.3 million.

Member for Gazelle and DDA Board chairman, Jelta Wong, said this is a priority project which will improve the living standard of people in these areas who are yet to access power supply.

Hand wash stations for ENB schools

Members of the Gazelle District Development Authority Board were on hand to receive the first four hand wash stations on Thursday, May 7, at the PI branch in Kokopo town.

Health Minister and Member for Gazelle, Jelta Wong said the ten hand wash stations will be distributed to two schools each in the five LLGs of Livuan-Reimber, Inland Baining, Lassul Baining, Toma-Vunadidir and Central Gazelle.

Over K230,000 for Gazelle school fee loans

Member for Gazelle and Health Minister, Jelta Wong, said the school fee grant of K300,000 was presented and received by the East New Britain Savings and Loans Society on 24th September, 2019.

ENBSL is managing this funding following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Gazelle District and ENBSL last year.

The Gazelle District Development Authority board had approved the school fee grant of K300,000 that students can access; loans and repayment rates are only one percent.

District engages Aust volunteers

Through the initiative of the Office of the Member for Gazelle and Health Minister, Jelta Wong, a partnership has been forged with the Gazelle District Administration and Australian Volunteers Program in PNG.

The first volunteer already working in the district is Rory McGrath, who joined last month and is engaged in the district’s health sector. He is a diabetes nurse from Central Australia and has experiences in remote health.

A second volunteer, Jodie Stewart, specialised in early childhood learning, is expected to arrive early next month (Feb).

Secret ballot held to choose developer

The order for the secret ballot was handed down by acting judge, Justice Thomas Anis from a court proceeding between Nangal Limited and contending developers, Tzen Niugini Limited (TZL) and K.K Connections Limited (KKCL).

This was from disputes between two factions from the area having differing opinions on who should log timber land and develop it following the logging.

KKCL was selected as the developer with 550 votes over TZL who drew in 308 votes.

New ATM for Gazelle district

Bank South Pacific (BSP) officially launched a new ATM at BSP’s Kerevat sub-branch on Wednesday, 13th September, 2017.

The ATM was officially launched by Member for Gazelle & Minister for Police, Jelta Wong.

The Minister expressed his gratitude towards BSP for providing this vital service to his people and the district.

“My people no longer have to travel a long distance to Kokopo for simple banking requirements, as the branch and the installation of the ATM now saves the people of Gazelle district time and money.”

Gazelle students to receive financial help

An allocation of K1.5 million was approved for the scheme is an increase from last year’s allocation of K1.3 million.

About more than 1200 students who applied for the scholarship this year were thoroughly screened by a committee before they were eligible for the assistance.

Gazelle MP and Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Malakai Tabar this year increased the scholarship package to about K1.5 million.

Man in court after toddler dies in fire

East New Britain police say the death occurred on August 1 this year at Bitakapuk village in Toma area  in the Vunadidir Local Level Government.

Police say Kelly Boniface had set fire to dried coconut leaves near the house when strong winds caused the fire to spread to their family house.

The child was trapped inside the house when it went up in flames.

Police have issued a strong warning to villagers to be mindful of making fires during windy periods.
