Kerema becomes 18th FSVU desk to be opened

This brings to 18 FSVU desks opened throughout the country. During the opening DPC Andrews said this was a positive step forward for Papua New Guinea in the fight against family and sexual violence.

New office to help sufferers of family and sexual violence

As a mom of two, she was once a victim but seeing the implementation of this project was a day she could never stop her heart from crying out in joy.

"I was a victim where my ex-husband would hit me or throw me out of the house just to go out with other women," Maria tearfully said.

"I also have been badly beaten with fractured bones and swollen eyes and sometimes, I get chucked out of the house for no good reason," she said.

"And with this unit now here, I would like to thank the people who initiated this project to set up in Kerema.”

Kerema strengthens law and order with FSVU

The FSVU building situated right in the heart of Kerema town police station was a partnership project between the Australian Government, the PNG Government and the RPNGC to serve the locals due to a high number of family violence cases in the area.

Australian High Commissioner Rod Hilton urged the locals at the ceremony to make use of the service that is put in place for their use.

"I would encourage the people to make good use of the FSVU by reporting cases concerning violence in family," he said.
