Boy, 7, sworn in as Detroit police chief for a day

Seven-year-old Carter Widmer was sworn in Wednesday as "Chief for the Day" by the department's official chief, James Craig. He flew into headquarters via helicopter, slapped some handcuffs on his father, Lt. John Widmer, and spent time with a police dog.

That part was particularly gratifying, since Carter donated $250 of his Christmas money to the Detroit Police K-9 Unit.

Carter says he wants to follow his father into law enforcement. The elder Widmer says his son's temporary promotion was a surprise, but exciting for the family.

The Democrat served 59 years in Congress, after being elected in 1955 to fill the House seat vacated by his father. Debbie Dingell was elected to her husband's Detroit-area seat after he decided to retire last year.

Life sentence, no parole for Detroit mom who killed 2 kids

Mitchelle Blair was charged, convicted and sentenced in less than four months, since an eviction crew discovered the children's bodies in the freezer in March. They had been stored there for a few years. She pleaded guilty in June to first-degree murder.

Mom pleads guilty to killing 2 kids found in home freezer

Mitchelle Blair, 36, has never challenged allegations that she killed her 13-year-old daughter and 9 year-old son, even saying she would accept the death penalty if Michigan had it. She faces life in prison with no chance for parole.

She was arrested in March, after deputies carrying out an eviction at her Detroit apartment found the bodies of her daughter, Stoni Blair, and son, Stephen Berry, in a deep freezer.

"I don't regret none of this," Blair told the judge Monday. "I don't feel no remorse for the death of those demons."
