Brad Pitt space drama Ad Astra among line-up

Director Steven Soderbergh's Panama Papers movie The Laundromat, which stars Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman, is also on the festival's line up.

Haifaa Al-Mansour, who is the first female director to shoot a movie in Saudia Arabia, will screen her new film The Perfect Candidate at the festival.

Controversially, Roman Polanski's latest An Officer and a Spy will also play at Venice. Polanski was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences last year because of his 1977 rape conviction. He's taking legal action in an attempt to be reinstated.

The two actors were introduced by Theron’s ex-fiancé Sean Penn The Sun reported.

The two got deep as they lobbed questions back and forth about the meaning of life, setting each other up for jokes.

In his first extensive interview since the power couple's highly-publicized divorce, Pitt told GQ Style he will not let things get ugly in court over the couple's six children.

"I just refuse," he said. "And fortunately my partner in this agrees. It's just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart."

The stars shocked fans in September 2016 when Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt after two years of marriage and more than ten years as a couple.

His interview with GQ Style marks the first time the actor has spoken publicly about the split.

"I just started therapy," Pitt said. "I love it. I love it. I went through two therapists to get to the right one."

He admitted to heavy drinking and pot smoking in the past and said he cut himself off emotionally from others.

"I'm personally very retarded when it comes to taking inventory of my emotions. I'm much better at covering up," the star added.

The estranged couple has agreed to seal all court documents pertaining to their divorce in order to protect their six children.

"The parties and their counsel have signed agreements to preserve the privacy rights of their children and family by keeping all court documents confidential and engaging a private judge to make any necessary legal decisions and to facilitate the expeditious resolution of any remaining issues. The parents are committed to act as a united front to effectuate recovery and reunification," the couple said in a statement obtained by CNN.

Brad Pitt 'will not be charged' after FBI investigation

The Oscar winner had been accused of mistreating son Maddox, 15, on board a private flight from France to Los Angeles.

Angelina Jolie filed for divorce soon afterwards and is seeking sole custody of their six children.

Social workers investigating the same claim cleared Pitt two weeks ago.

The FBI said: "In response to allegations made following a flight... carrying Mr Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI has conducted a review of the circumstances and will not pursue further investigation.

"No charges have been filed in this matter."

Brad Pitt's first post-split 'interview'

The star has been mostly MIA since his announced split from wife Angelina Jolie in September.

On Tuesday he made an appearance in Los Angeles at a screening for the film "Moonlight" and Wednesday attended an event for his new film, "Allied."

Pitt signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans as he walked the red carpet.

A Facebook Live of the event on the movie's Facebook page featured a brief interview with Pitt as he made his way down the carpet.

"It's really sweet, everyone's been very kind out here," Pitt said. "It's nice to have the support."
