Sexual assault cases prevalent

Cases of sexual assault against children are being heard at the Committal Courts every day.

A senior magistrate at the Waigani Committal Court, Cosmas Bidar raised the concern when arraigning a 20 year old youth who was recently arrested over the persistent sexual assault of a 6 year-old.

He said something is wrong in society and cases of such nature are becoming prevalent and the courts are seeing them every day.

He made this comments after reading the charges against a youth from Mul Buyer area in the Western Highlands Province.

The 20 year-old appeared in court over allegations he continuously sexually assaulted the victim between 31 October and December 5 this year in Port Moresby.

A new case in court, it is one of the many reported cases of such while others go unreported.

Police will continue its investigations over the next three months to produce its investigations filed against the defendant. The file will consist statements from the victim and witnesses as well as medical reports.
