Law enforcers urged to maintain discipline amid tensions

Security personnel in Enga Province have been urged to maintain self-discipline and commitment in carrying out their duties.

With a lot of law and order issues, especially from tribal fighting taking place in the province, PPC Chief Superintendent Joseph Tondop said this festive season has been challenging.

Enga province has had its fair share of law and order issues, from mass killings to ethnic violent tensions, and now issues near the Porgera gold mine area, where illegal miners threaten workers’ safety.

Following the ethnic clash between the people of Kandep and Paiyala, which resulted in deaths and destruction of properties, PPC Tondop is appealing to the Kandep faction to withdraw from where they are now camping in Porgera.

Disgruntled relatives of the Kandep deceased moved into Porgera valley and conquered Yarik SML area, showing strength to take revenge with Paiyala faction at Kumbipara.

Earlier he met with community leaders, key stakeholders and Porgera team leaders at the Porgera Development Authority (PDA) conference room, where he issued a similar appeal.

He also commended the community leaders at Yarik SML area, especially Arnold Kulina, from the Kandep faction, who took ownership in the arrangement of repatriation.
