Institution has been unaccountable, says Kulang

The newly appointed Board of Directors for the National Cultural Commission was told to prepare annual reports to be presented to Parliament.

Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Tobias Kulang, said this is the top priority for the Board.

Kulang revealed that the annual reports that NCC is required to present to the people, through the Parliament, has been nonexistent for years.

“This institution has not been accountable to the people through Parliament and that includes audits of the financial statements.

“NCC needs to account for the assets to ensure that it is an accountable institution to the people of PNG through Parliament and National Executive Council.

“There’s a lot of work that needs to be done because at this stage, I have not seen genuine proper financial reports from this institution,” he said.

Kulang told the Board members to ask the tough questions and hold officers accountable as a complete clean up needs to be done.

“If they’re not qualified and if they’re not doing their job properly then you need to sack them and bring new people in.”

The Board will be chaired by Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari and comprises of eight members from a range of fields in the government and corporate sector.
