ENB festive security ops underway

The 2022 Police Christmas festive operation in East New Britain Province commenced as of Monday, December 12th.

Acting ENB Provincial Police Commander and First Officer to the PPC, Chief Inspector Gabriel Bundy, said the festive operations will conclude on the 2nd of January 2023, and will cover road checks, sea patrols, patrolling hot spot areas, executing bench warrants and looking for escapees from the Kerevat Correctional Institution.

Bundy said police will be working closely with the Ward Members and their Ward Development Committees to locate escapees.

“We are already in full swing with the festive operations, so I appeal to criminals or opportunists to be mindful because if they are caught, they will feel the full force of the law.

“Likewise, those celebrating should remain within their premises, because if you come outside and try to misbehave in the streets, you will also be dealt with by police.”

When asked about the engagement of security firms, Bundy said this was done through an arrangement by the ENBPG and its administration.

“According to the Constitution, the Police Department can only recognise and engage reservists, because we train them, and also because private security firms have their own terms and conditions.

“But they (security firms) have powers to do citizens’ arrests, and can bring suspects to police.”

The acting PPC further acknowledged the ENB Provincial Government, through the provincial administration, for its continued support to the police department.

He further cautioned the public to be careful as opportunists and criminals will be targeting unsuspecting citizens.
