‘Street children’ issue needs more support: Minister

The growing issue of ‘street children’ has captured the Government’s attention however, their implemented strategies need more support.

Minister for Youth, Religion and Community Development, Soroi Eoe, told this newsroom that support from stakeholders is needed to make it more effective.

Responding to queries raised on future plans of orphanages in Papua New Guinea, the Minister said there are plans in place which hopefully, may take effect sooner than expected.

However at the moment, the department is depending on existing platforms like church and social bodies that have already initiated most of these programs – one such group is the Life PNG Care.

The Minister noted that every child has the right to be educated and housed however, most of these children are victims or survivors of situations. In spite of that, he pointed out that it is the government’s responsibility, through relevant stakeholders, to tackle this matter immediately.
