Termination of student leaders not a solution for peace at UPNG: Polye

Opposition Leader Don Polye has described the termination of student leaders at the University of Papua New Guinea as ‘unfair, unjust and a bad decision’.

Polye said the reasons the university council gave to justify their termination were shallow, adding the justifications are the subject of the current investigation.

“Termination is not an appropriate tool to restore peace and order at the campus.

“The government deserves to be terminated by the people and not the students,” he said.

Polye, a former student leader, said the boycott of class was decided by the majority and not individuals with vested interests.

“They stood up for us, leaders, those who are members of the university council, our children and the country as a whole when those of us mandated to protect the state institutions, democracy and rule of law, compromised our stance.

“Our alternative government foresaw the termination looming when the university management failed to facilitate a legal referendum by the Electoral Commission,” he said.

Polye has called on the council to rescind its decision, pending the outcome of the investigation.

He said the council abused its powers when terminating them.
