Survey to shed light on skills shortage

A survey into skills shortage and employment is currently being carried out by two global entities in PNG.

Conducted by Deloitte and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the survey hopes to shed light on the skills most in need in PNG, which ultimately will help policy makers and businesses in planning for the future.

Deloitte Manager Economics and Policy Advisory, Todd McInnis, tells Loop PNG the survey focuses on employment growth, which is crucial to local capacity building, and ensure sustainable and equitable development for locals.

“The survey has two main goals  - to assess the factors which prevent or discourage businesses from expanding their staff numbers; and to assess the specific skills and occupations most in need amongst the business community, and the extent to which those skills and occupations are difficult to source locally,” says McInnis.

The survey is part of a ‘thought leadership’ piece of research implemented by both organizations.

The issue cam about during Deloitte’s research into high internet rates in PNG.

McInnis says this survey can only be effective if it gets enough responses from the business community.

“We need the business community of PNG to tell us what impacts on their hiring decisions, and what skills and occupations they desperately need to complete their operations.”

“If you are a PNG based employer, then your help in completing the survey would be gratefully appreciated,” McInnis says.

The survey can be accessed through the following link - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PGSYDNP .

Alternatively, Deloitte can be contacted at survey@deloitte.com.pg, or on 308 7000 for hard copies of the survey.
