Students learn about PNG’s diverse culture in inaugural program

The Port Moresby Nature Park is hosting a week-long school excursion program called “Cultural Week”, which starts today.

A first-of-its kind, the program, designed for kids within Port Moresby, creates an interactive environment to learn about Papua New Guinea’s unique and diverse culture and how to preserve it.

Under the main theme “Connecting Culture and Conservation”, the event provides informative stalls throughout the park that are broken down into the Southern, New Guinea Islands, Highlands and Momase regions. It also includes animal encounters, legends and storytelling and artifacts displays.

Education supervisor for Port Moresby Nature Park, Ishimu Bebe, says how we conserve our plants and animals plays a very important role in their existence. This is the reason why Port Moresby Nature Park has dedicated this week for school students within NCDC to take the excursion and learn about the values and practices put into preserving and conserving plants and animals.

The target groups for schools to come in are grades Four to Eight students.

“This year, over 2,500 to 3,000 school students from 11 different schools have confirmed for the Cultural Week school excursion program, starting today until Friday,” Bebe says.

Cultural Week will run over four days (6 – 9 Sept) from 9am – 1pm daily.
