PNG welcomes financial help for climate change

Papua New Guinea is ready to receive financial assistance from international organisations for climate change mitigation and adaptation programs.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Rimbink Pato recently signed the Privileges and Immunity Agreement with Green Climate Fund (GCF) in New York, USA.

GCF was established to assist developing countries finance their mitigation and adaptation programs.

This follows the recent deposition of the instruments of ratification at the United Nations Headquarters in New York which formalised the application of the Climate Change Paris Agreement.

This enables PNG to secure assistance from development partners and international organizations to combat the effects of climate change.

The signing of the privileges and immunities agreement paves the way for officials from GCF to enter PNG and work with government.

GCFs’ visit to PNG is to facilitate the readiness and preparatory stage for the purposes of accessing climate finance.

CCDA acting managing director Ruel Yamuna said CCDA is committed to partner with GCF and welcomes any opportunity to build capacity.

He said PNG is fortunate to have legally established CCDA as its focal point as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) allows only one focal point in any one country.

Yamuna is calling for all government agencies and stakeholders of the CCDA to work with CCDA to implement the Paris Agreement and utilize the opportunities presented by it.
